Jeff Bezos is leaving Seattle for Miami | CNN Business

According to the article he says that it is to be closer to his parents and he lived in Miami when he was younger. His space company is also doing more work out of Cape Canaveral.

Washington has a 7% capital gains tax and Florida has no capital gains taxes. He bought two houses in Biscayne Bay for $144 million dollars. So if he sold some Amazon stock and had a tax gain of $2 billion dollars he basically saved enough on taxes to buy those two homes.

I can sure understand him wanting to move back home and be closer to his parents.

Great, another billionaire moving to South Florida to drive real state prices further into the stratosphere. While all the high paying jobs he created remain in the West Coast and NE.

Maybe Amazon will finally open a corporate office in Florida. Third most populous state in the country and all we get are warehouses.

Of course, your hope is that all 'the ppl" get leveled as with a lawn mower to the least common denominator, rather than getting 'lifted with a rising tide.'

Radical alternative solution: maybe Washington could cut its taxes to keep its billionaires around.

(...or not. I suppose Florida can stand to take in another to add to its 500+ or so).

Is Miami that much better than Seattle?

Well, I guess where he is going to stay and buy, yes. They have their own islands for people with their kind of money down there.

I'm sure that Washington state will be fine losing the guy who already created his giant business in their state (and is, noticeably, not moving that business out of the state).

I don't think it matters, seems like he spends most of his time on his yacht

When you have Bezos money there are probably few better places for a primary residence in the US than S Fla

I can't imagine Bezos is too concerned with the tax implications of his finances. But maybe i'm wrong and he's one of those uber rich guys who is hyper focused on it.

You think his accountants are like "hey richest guy in the world, you should move to Florida to save some money?"

I mean maybe. I'm too poor to know what rich people do
