Its worth it for cops, that's how they make money lol. I'm not in love with red light cameras either.

When you say 'Irishmen', there's no need to add 'drinking problem'.

The mishaps we see in the media are very rare. Most cops are good people who do a good job.

But that’s how probably cause usually works. Cops need a reason to escalate a stop to a search and seizure. Besides, if a person is planning to shoot a cop while he’s looking at the registration, they’d probably lie when asked if they have gun. People like, who were honest and cooperative, put themselves at risk of a cop freaking out and shooting if they make a move to scratch their balls.

More seriously though, most traffic stops are a pretext to do something else. That isnt going to be replaced by technology. That will require a rethink on drug war policy as well as walking away from "proactive" policing as an ideology altogether.

I see the Irish don't get the same protections that cops do around here.

I've always found proactive policing on the roadways to be problematic. It's confrontational, unsafe, and expensive to tax payers. You want to do DUI checkpoints? Fine. That' usually a team of cops and bad stuff doesn't usually happen there. You want to do a big speeding trap with a ton of cops? Fine. I just wish we could move away from the culture where cops are swimming around the roadways like sharks looking for something to eat. I do understand it's probably unrealistic to ask for.

Side note - I've been pulled over several times in life - no one has ever asked me if I have a weapon - is that a new policy?

    It’s that way almost everywhere.
By definition, even if it’s minor, the police are dealing with someone who has broken the law and is about to be ID’d and may have reason to not want to be. Many people take off from cops after being pulled over or stopped on the street and acting politely, because they have a warrant, or drugs in the car or on them etc. and couldn’t BS their way out of being ID’d or searched. Do you want that person with a gun? Gun owners never seem to complain, they understand why it’s being done.

What’s far more interesting to me is how the same folks that used to mock people for anecdotal stories are the ones who seem to want to bring them here now. There are probably upwards of a half a million police interactions a day nationally. Of course you can find bad cops, bad stops, and even illegal activities if you look for it. Heck you could probably find dozens or more a day, it’s simple probability. What’s more telling is that these same people never bring stories of cops doing good things, or for reference, the 378 cops shot in the line of duty in 2023 and any of their stories. Wonder why?

Yeah, I don't remember being asked either. I'm pretty sure one of the times I was pulled over was a fishing expedition too. Cop said I had illegal tinting, even though I had out of state tags. I was like "its not illegal in Florida" ... no ticket. Pretty sure he was just sizing me up for running drugs or something else.

I've only been pulled over a couple times. I don't recall ever being asked that.

I was talking with a co-worker a couple days ago after seeing one of those "Come and take it" decals on a truck in the parking lot. We both pretty much called it dumb at the same time. We are both gun owners, raised up around them. I don't know what it worse, putting a cop on alert that there may be a gun in the vehicle, or putting theives on alert that there may be a gun in the vehicle.

What's disturbing is being asked "Are there any large amounts of cash in the vehicle?" Congrats, you've been stopped by a literal road pirate.

Have only been stopped once in the last 20 years and immediately told the officer I had a gun- he asked where it was and I told him and he asked me if I had a carry license which I said I did- he said would I mind getting out and stand back by his cruiser and I said okay and then he opened my glove box and got not only my gun but my insurance card and registration. He looked at my registration and then we spent the next 15 minutes talking about guns.

If it was 20 years ago, you probably had obligation under the terms of your concealed carry permit to tell the cop you had a gun when asked. I'm not sure that's the case anymore since Florida went to permitless carry. I'm not even sure you have to answer them at all, anymore. But even back then, what would have happened if you exercised your right to say you didn't want your car searched? When you are eagerly willing to give up your rights, then having them doesn't matter. It's when you exercise your rights, that things get tricky.

The last time I got pulled over I had made a turn into the wrong lane at a traffic light. I saw the police car in the line of traffic and knew as soon as the light changed he would be coming after me so I pulled over and waited for him. When he pulled up behind me and got out of his car I immediately told him I knew what I did wrong and pulled over knowing he would be coming after me. He appreciated that I realized my error and pulled over even though I could have probably just kept going and he would have had a hard time catching up to me once the light changed. He gave me a verbal warning then let me go.

In most cases if you have the right attitude you are going to be alright, a ticket is about the worse thing that is going to happen. Most cops are just there to do a job. If you have the right attitude so do they.

Very poor gun safety. Every gun safety class teaches you treat a gun that you have not been in control of as if it's loaded and cocked. So there's no way any police should be fumbling around someone's clothing to try to remove a gun from them. It's dangerous for both parties.

Perhaps there's a concealed carry registry which the LEO saw when they looked up the driver? Just guessing. I was asked that Q once, but was when pulled over for suspicion of burglary. I was apparently dressed like the perp.
