I think this is the heart of the matter. But where does it end?

Rationally speaking it ends where the expense of the sport exceeds the revenue generated.

Meaning the only way this does not become even more of a disaster and threat to an otherwise well intentioned and beneficial system of student (primary end) - athletes (means to the end) is to peel the cash cows off and make them (overtly) what they (covertly) already are - farm teams for the pro leagues.

I am readily approaching the point where I would rather watch and cheer for a bunch of student walk-ons playing student walk-ons from other like minded schools than continue to engage with this farcical money making machine.

I'm punting on third down on this one. It's just difficult to imagine that anything sustainable, coherent, or even vaguely resembling actual CFB would result as a product of some form of "quasi-pro, school brand licensing scheme/NFL farm league". I am personally repelled by the prospect of a pick-up squad of transient mercenaries calling themselves the Florida Gators. Sadly, things are already headed that way as hard as they can go. But I would caution that even a bad situation can always get worse. Frankly, the only thing I expect in the "NFL farm system" paradigm is a "cluster" for the ages and the eventual demise of CFB as we know it. I'm out.

Exactly. Remember, by making football completely separate, you are no longer offering scholarships to football players. Title 9 says you have to have as many scholarships for women as for men (or at least as close as possible).

Again under this proposal the football players are employees, not student-athletes. They wouldn't even be required to attend classes.

As for those who say they could leave. It's not that much different than regular companies. For most lower level employees or lower end managers they are "at-will" employment which means either they or the employer can end the employment at any time. We all know that for regular companies a lot of those in the executive level are under specific contracts.

You would offer players contracts just like you would offer coaches. The player doesn't have to play all of the two years under my proposal, but just like a non-compete clause in a regular business, they would not be able to play for the competition until the two year contract is up. You could change coaching contracts to have the same setup.

Again football players are by and large the only ones who would benefit from this setup. That is why you would keep the other sports as student-athletes, as those student-athletes benefit more from scholarships than they would being university employees with a salary. Football players benefit more from being university employees with a salary than being "student-athletes" with scholarships.

And for those saying they would become nothing more than mercenaries. Newsflash, it's been that way for a long time, it's just more out in the open now. Football players by and large (exceptions for some players like Tebow and Weurffel) have been mercenaries even going back to the 90s. It was just easier for you to ignore that side of the sport.

As long as they’re forced to attend school to remain eligible, they’re going to receive scholarships.

Better idea - allow players to get paid in an organized and standard fashion (contracts and all) for use of their name, image and likeness. Problem solved. If a player is paid simply to show up on campus then sanction the program.

I've never had an issue with players getting paid for a commercial, an autograph signing, or usage in a video game. In fact this encourages both loyalty to a program and playing in games including bowl games. Who do you want representing your business in a commercial, a quality player who has built up a fan base over multiple seasons or some fly by night 17 year old who is already in the transfer portal and kinda tries a bit but not enough to get hurt.

That's the whole point of them being employees. They are employees, not student athletes. They would not receive scholarships and would not be forced to attend classes. If they want to attend classes they would have to pay out of pocket with the standard university employee discount. No more dealing with academic eligibility.

If they’re not going to school, it’s not college football. Watch your alumni interest and money dry up.

    Define bad.

    Is Pop Warner football bad?
    Is high school football bad?
    Is FCS football bad?

I used to like college BB, but have found it less likeable the more it looks like the NBA, which I find entirely unenjoyable.

IMO a large part of what makes/made college football enjoyable was the teams being built mostly of people who were not going pro.

Are NFL players employees? If they are then the college players could be tied to a contract just like NFL. If the NFL players aren't employees, then colleges would have to set up their system just like it.

In either case, employee or no employee, NIL will still be around. Nothing to stop a collective or booster to dole out cash to sign with at school. The courts have already said NIL is legal. The only question in my mind is who controls the NIL payments? Boosters, collectives, or maybe the UAA..
