I honestly no better than to engage him. I just sometimes respond without thinking it thru. He isn’t so bad that I want to ignore him but he is so bad that I don’t want to respond to him.
Interesting that he describes baseball as more "democratic" and "meritocratic" because he says it doesn't require as much athleticism - presumably because athleticism is inherited and not earned? He seems to be saying any almost any kid can be a great baseball player, and I'm not sure that's even true. Either way, it's an interesting way to think about what meritocracy even means in a world where we tend to focus only on results and performance rather than who put in the time and made the most progress given what they had to work with.
Seems like he's describing baseball like 30 years ago. Baseball is full of white dudes from the suburbs who did pay for play travel teams because their parents had money and extremely athletic Latin guys coming out of baseball factories of a different sort. Wouldnt be the first time some guy romanticized baseball. Basketball was invented by a Canadian after all, its basically communism.
"Marxism is a theory that believes that capitalist society is based on inequalities between the bourgeoisie (ruling capitalist class) and the proletariat (working class). It is a conflict theory as it states society is in constant conflict between these social classes." Marxism (Sociology): Meaning, Cultural & Examples "Marxists believe that capitalist society is unjust and unequal due to social class divisions. They believe that the bourgeoisie (ruling capitalist class) controls the economy and exploits the proletariat (working class) for profits. They also believe that capitalism should be overthrown to create a more just society with no exploitation." Marxism (Sociology): Meaning, Cultural & Examples Critical Race Theory is derived and inspired by Critical Theory which is openly Marxist. "Contrary to its origins in Marxian theoretical realism..." Critical Theory (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) "Critical Theory provides a specific interpretation of Marxist philosophy" Frankfurt School and Critical Theory | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Critical Race Theory Tenets: "1. Race is a social construction 2. Although individuals can indeed be racist, racism and its outcomes are perpetuated in society through social processes above and beyond individual actions including through cultural norms, institutional rules, and laws and regulations. 3. Because the differential treatment of individuals based upon racial classification is embedded within social systems and institutions—including public policy and law—racism is commonplace rather than rare and aberrant. As such, racism is omnipresent in society, which CRT refers to as “normal.” 4. While racism is perpetuated at the structural/macro level in society, listening to and understanding the lived experiences of individuals is essential for understanding how racism works to create inequities in individual outcomes, including health. A main question for population health is how does living within institutions and systems that differentially structure exposures, experiences, and opportunities based on race/ethnicity get “under the skin” and produce health inequities?3-6" The Tenets of Critical Race Theory Have a Long-Standing and Important Role in Population Health Science | Milbank Memorial Fund In essence, Critical Race Theory was derived from Critical Theory which is openly Marxist. Marxism pushes equity-based policy by separating people into groups like "proletariat" and "bourgeoisie." Critical Race Theory just buries that underlying distinction behind "Black" and "White;" behind race. It's the same game with "racism" dressing on top of it.
A lot of people considered the description put forth here as anti-semitic, but it sounded like he was just being complimentary https://www.theatlantic.com/interna...ing-oriental-hebrew-basketball-players/34002/
He played baseball at Yale, so it doesn't shock me that he loves baseball. But it sounds like he's short-changing basketball players by focusing on their natural gifts and downplaying of all of the hard work, skill development, strategy, and team work it takes to play at high levels. I wonder where he would place football or swimming on his meritocratic scale.
I'm not arguing that he's not a racist & I am not arguing that he is not anti-semitic. I am only saying that that video IMO is a nothing burger. Akin to "I'm the Chosen one". When you got people like Trump & Bootsie freq throwing meatballs down the middle, why waste your time on a low inside pitch?
I just listened again. That was an incredibly racist statement. Extremely racist. I completely stand by that characterization. I could break it down but I'm driving and dictated at a stoplight
against who? White unathletic baseball players? might be the 1st time in the history of GC that athletic freak is seen as a pejorative
Perhaps so. I do agree that race plays in role, consciously or subconsciously, in how Americans think and feel about various sports. But maybe it's also just human nature for people to overstate the fortune of others for having natural gifts while patting themselves on the back for their own hard work and dedication. Some people seem to talk as if basketball players are just lucky because they won the genetic lottery but ignore smaller guys who succeeded or ignore how many players are hitting the gym before most of us even wake up.
Well, he never said a thing about whether baseball or basketball players have to work harder.* He did make it clear that he thinks basketball players are superior athletes. * I interpreted it as pointing out the obv, that there is a greater ATHLETIC barrier to entry in basketball.
I wonder if things will change now that the best basketball player in the world is a chubby white guy that looks like he smokes a pack a day
