Yeah, pretty much. So let us savor these times, as challenging as they may be. Football is rotting from the roots up. Fewer kids playing full contact football. Fewer kids engaged or invested in it. The last bastion of industrial age masculinity. It's on its way down and out. So don't be too quick to jump ship, when there's no other ship to jump to. Savor it.
Someone mentioned the players being employees. What about a non compete clause? In my state I can’t go work for a competitor unless I’m fired.
I believe it has been mentioned that there is legislation/litigation going on right now to make a majority of non competes worthless.
1. Can’t enter the portal until bowl season is over, no mid season entries 2. One transfer during your college career 3. Should have to state a reason for transfer that is shared with current team and any prospective teams.
The portal is open at the end of the regular season. Bowl season is an extra curricular activity controlled by 3rd parties, not the NCAA. They only have 1 transfer now as an undergrad. The second is as a graduate. As for the last, I'm sure that happens behind closed doors in exit meetings and is not privy to fans.
There is no legal way to reign this in. It's gone. I suggest a return to the NFL. They are the best players and RedZone is the best way to watch football ever.
I remember not too long ago when so many people said that scholarships were not enough; the players deserve their share of the pie. Now folks are essentially lamenting free market capitalism.
They would not be employees (who could likely get out of a non-compete). A school would sign them (or a team would sign them) to a contract for personal services that would obligate them to only play for that team for the term of the contract (just like a pro football contract).
Also I wouldn’t use the term “boycott”, I’d substitute “lose interest in” for that. I’m not mad, I just wouldn’t care anymore. When I gave up the NFL I actually felt relieved, no more tied to the tv on Sunday (and Monday, Thursday) and I could use the brainpower pro football absorbed and do something else with it.
Most non-competes even now aren't really worth the ink used to write them. The only thing that it really helps protect is if an employee tries to share valuable IP with a new employer. I doubt anyone would care if I went and accounted for my employer's direct competitor.
Yep, hardly any are even pursued unless there’s some intellectual property going along with it, or unless a competitor raids you and takes a bunch of employees all at once. They’re mostly used as a scare tactic to make people think they have no other option.
Boycott? I mean, to each their own. I know I'm waaaaay less invested in the past couple of years than I was. I somewhat miss the excitement, but maybe I'm better off not letting it get me down when we're not doing well. I'm not sure empty stadiums really matter any more. Lower and lower TV ratings might.
Tv ratings won’t matter until years down the road. The tv contracts are done and locked in for the next decade.
If these are the kinds of subjects that people here are going to be posting this off season then I might just take a break from this forum for a while... The world in NOT coming to an end becasue we like many other schools (wait till the bowl games are all over) are losing players to the portal. It's fixable without having to make threads that panic the weak minded minions that will take this subject and drive it into the ground... over and over until September of next year. By the way: TOS said that The Gators have the #3 LB class in 2024 coming in. I think we could be ranked higher.. I have to wait until the full article becomes free to read.
There's always the Ivy League. We could attend a ridiculous protest of something or other after the games and discuss French poetry over a mug of hot cocoa while singing Joan Baez songs about the murdering copper bosses. Sign me up!
My enjoyment for college football has drastically declined with the mess I perceive regarding portal and NIL. It's gotten to the point I really don't look forward to football season and of course with our programs struggles its just more aggravation that enjoyment.
I wouldn't piss away $ on the stadium, not yet, I'd use the $ to get recruits and once they're in place and we're winning again, heck, spend a billion on the darn stadium! Did we hire people for the athletic department from the NCAA? Just saying... Cushy seats, ultra jumbo-trons, and fancy toilets? Heck, I'd gladly pee in the woods if we're winning again. Go Gators.
