He would burn a year of eligibility and relegate Sam Alexis to virtually no playing time. I think it would help this year's team some, but the question he and Golden has to answer is, "Is it worth it?" Personally, I don't know. We have great depth and a sound rotation now and are 18-2. What impact would Micah have on that and would it affect the current chemistry negatively or positively? We won't know unless he decides to play.
In general, I don't think "special season" outweighs "burn a year." But it's possible he gains a lot from being in a potential run, which then sets him up next year when we really need some standouts. (But he's in a group that will be loaded next year.) Lots of moving parts.
Based on what I read, it basically comes down to whether Micah is emotionally prepared to test out his leg in live fire action this year or not. Probably no different than the RBs who tear their ACLs, one thing is the repair and the other is the proof. IMO, right now he can get into games and frutz around some to get to a better emotional state without much impact to the games' outcomes. That way he will be prepared to assist in earnest coming down the stretch and the tourney. But the longer he waits, the better it will be to wait until next year. Getting back on the horse is not always the easiest thing to do.
Knock on wood, but we haven't seen any missed playing time due to injury or illness (flu season). If Micah is willing to burn his redshirt to help enhance that special season, we should allow him to do it. I know we have some backcourt depth, that unfortunately isn't getting much playing time outside of Aberdeen, but I am curious if Haupt could take Richards role for a few minutes. Many including me can see as a three at least part time next year.
For the staff, it’s a no-brainer. Chinyelu and Condon are first-year starters, and Alexis is playing at this level for the first time. All of them have been fighting through some issues on the court in league play as a result. Handlogten gives you a 7 footer and elite offensive rebounder with a year worth of starting experience in the SEC (and another at Marshall). Assuming he is playing well in practice and isn’t averse to contact, bring him in for a couple of 2-3 minute rotations in the first half, play the second half by ear, then increase his time as he gets his wind back. You have 11 games for him to play his way into game shape before we really need him, and in the meantime he provides you a few extra fouls and whatever else he can bring you. That’s only from the staff’s perspective, though. The kid’s perspective is a lot more complicated. Not surprised he is waffling. If he is, then it’s better he sit out and stick with the plan.
Well, from what I read we ARE allowing him to do it. CTG says the decision is Micah's to make. Will Richard is performing at a high level, so I doubt the Haugh will take his minutes. If Micah returns, I think we up it from an 8-man rotation to a 9-man rotation, with Alexis losing some floor time. It would probably be a few games before Micah knocks the rust off and gets 10 minutes per game (unless he comes in and wows us right away). As it turns out, UGA would have been a great game for Micah to make his first appearance. With the game out of reach, he'd have logged a lot of minutes in the late stages. But no one expected such a lopsided blowout.
I think there’s no doubt he upgrades the lineup if healthy, not a massive upgrade mind you. Chinyelu especially has been great and earning his minutes. Seems like Handlogten would probably take Alexis minutes and it would pretty much lock the 5 to Chinyelu and Handlogten. The question is if he wants to burn that year. Maybe if he only sees himself here 1 more year it doesn’t matter whether he “burns” it. It only matters if he thinks he wants to stay 2 more years. Obviously if there’s any doubts about the leg he shouldn’t push it. If he’s confident then it’s a matter of if he cares about that 5th year. Then again with the wackiness of eligibility these days maybe he gets that 5th year possibility either way (the NCAA is seemingly going that direction).
Micah‘s red shirt would be a medical red shirt. If he steps on the floor after the ninth game of the season, then he loses the red shirt.
I am not so sure that Micah‘s return would improve the team. It seems to me, although I don’t have the back-up data, that we are most effective when Condon and Haugh are on the floor together. If Mika’s coming back means that Condon would no longer be playing the five, then we have eliminated the combination of Condon and Haugh. However, if Micah is interested in coming back, then I think we should try to get 100 of us to contribute $10,000 each so that we could give Micah the million dollars he would be losing in the long run. If you guys are interested, I can set up an account in my name and you can each wire me $10,000. Then, if Micah does come back, I can send him the million dollars. If Micah does not come back, I will send you an address in Cabo where you can contact me, as I would be spending all of next year there.
The ncaa. They’re giving the juco transfers an extra year because of the Pavia settlement, and they’re contemplating a 5th year for everyone. There are dozens of articles about it.
How about this and complicating things a little more.... I don't know the NIL rules in general but makes me say hhhmmmm. If Micah does come back does his NIL money go up this year or does he get the same money anyways?
Don’t know why any current contracts would change, and they’re not legally allowed to be based on pt or performance so there should be no incentive based increase on that front. He can land other new deals or restructure a deal at any time though. If someone wants to give him more money, they’re welcome to do so.
I want you to know I was thinking about you after Golden dropped that 30 point beat down on Mike White's dogs. So I was thinking: I really should have paid more attention to tampajack1's coaching recommendations back in the day................lol
Micah is part of this year's team whether or not he plays. Part of making a basketball program a longstanding success is to treat your players the right way. So, I believe that it should be Micah's choice as to whether he plays at all this year, and I don't think that he should be pressured to play by the coaching staff. Equally important is that this team is 18-2 with the 2 losses being by a total of 6 points. Putting Micah into the rotation is just as likely to do harm as it is to do good. Todd Golden is not a dummy, and he knows this. There is a reasonable chance that if Micah comes back this season, he doesn't play more than 5 minutes per game. That would not be in the best interest of this program on a long-term basis.
