One of my sons is being deployed to the Mideast. He is involved with a helicopter group. Being intentionally vague.

Looks like it has started. Campaign is said to be require at least one week, and is designed to make a significant impact on Iran to the point of deterrence. That seems impossible, IMO. We will see.

I understand your point but we knew they were spreading out and still waited, leaking out a lot of statements that we were not going to do this piecemeal and do something with more planning and scope to make a more lasting effect than had we hit a couple of locations with some massed personnel.

I don't know what that means and I'm skeptical anything would have that great an effect. But I don't want to judge it until it occurs and then with at least a few months if not longer to really analyze what occurred. I think so many mistakes in judgment are made by people who want to immediately judge the effect of a certain policy, especially one involving a foreign power. It will not be possible to have an informed opinion in months, IMO

Trump didn't do anything to Iran but give them aid and comfort.

Not to mention that no event in the last century has empowered Iran as much as Iraq War.

Yeah, made me LOL picturing the empty buildings.

Biden wants to send a message and not look weak, not so real damage.

And he is terrible about announcing things too early. Will never forget him naming Seal Team Six 2 days after the UBL raid. Shoulda bombed first, announced later (if possible).

US seizes massive stash of Iranian weapons headed for Houthi rebels in Yemen including hundreds of ballistic missile parts and explosives being shipped over on a rusty skiff in the Arabian Sea (msn.com)

US forces operating in the Arabian Sea have seized a massive arsenal of Iranian weapons that were bound for Houthi rebels in Yemen, the latest indication that Tehran plans to prolong the conflict in the region by supplying the terror group.
    ......................
The weaponry included materials necessary for ballistic missiles, anti tank rockets and explosives as well as communication equipment.
    ............................
This is yet another example of Iran's malign activity in the region. Their continued supply of advanced conventional weapons to the Houthis is in direct violation of international law and continues to undermine the safety of international shipping and the free flow of commerce,' CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla.

at least they are trying. don't understand why a submersible or some divers haven't wrapped a cable around this ships prop yet or disabled it somehow

US Conducted Cyberattack on Suspected Iranian Spy Ship, NBC News Reports (usnews.com)

(Reuters) -The United States conducted a cyberattack recently against an Iranian military ship in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden that had been collecting intelligence on cargo vessels, NBC News reported on Thursday, citing three U.S. officials.

The cyberattack took place a week ago as part of a government response to a drone attack by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq that killed three U.S. service members in Jordan late last month and wounded dozens of others, the report said.

NBC reported that the operation was intended to inhibit the ship’s ability to share intelligence with Houthi militants in Yemen.

Iran's latest Commander of elite Qud Guards is "expanding his predecessor's vision of chaos in the Middle East." Meaning, Iran will export more weapons and explosives to more terrorist groups than ever before. It's a shame that republican dimwits in Congress know so little about world affairs, or they might be concerned by this (which their cowardice is partly responsible for).

interesting read. stats make it obvious that houthi friendly countries enjoy free passage with no fear of being targeted.

China routing more traffic to Suez to take advantage of the reduced traffic

Houthi Red Sea Attacks Impose ‘Economic Sanctions’ on Israel’s Backers | Baker Institute

The Suez Canal is a well-known strategic chokepoint. In normal times, the canal carries 12% of global sea trade, including 30% of container shipping. About 15% of globally traded crude and refined products normally pass through the Red Sea, roughly 8.5 million barrels per day (Mb/d) — 5.5 Mb/d of crude oil and 3 Mb/d of refined products (from a Wood Mackenzie slide presentation, February 2024, “Red Sea Crisis: Not for US refiners as Margins Boom!”). As the attacks approach their fourth month, transits through the Red Sea are down by 65% from the 2023 average, according to figures from Clarksons, a maritime consultancy.[4] International Monetary Fund data show transits dropping from 74 ships per day on average in 2023 to 45 per day in recent weeks, while Bloomberg data show transits around the Cape of Good Hope are up by 54% in same period.

But these figures hide multiple disparities:

    • Shipping by firms such as China-based COSCO and OOCL, South Korea’s “K” Line and Taiwan-based Evergreen showed little change.
    • Most or all voyages by Denmark’s Maersk, Israel’s ZIM, Japan’s Mitsui OSK, Swedish-Norwegian Wallenius Wilhemsen, and France’s CMA CGM have routed around the Cape of Good Hope.[5]
    • Chinese COSCO container ships were reported passing unobstructed as recently as late February, while additional Chinese carriers were shifting into the Red Sea trade to capitalize on advantaged access and higher rates.[6]
    .................................................
The Houthi strategy has therefore had the effect of imposing economic sanctions against countries supporting Israel. Firms in countries friendly to the United States and Israel are rerouting to a greater extent than those with a neutral stance, or where leaders have spoken in support of a cease-fire and Palestinian statehood. Examinations of registry information and destinations using the MarineTraffic app reveal a strong bifurcation in traffic, as non-Western ships and cargoes continue to use the Red Sea transit, while those with ownership or destinations in Europe or North America detour around southern Africa.
    ....................................
JP Morgan’s research division issued a global forecast in February saying that the Red Sea “disruptions could add 0.7 percentage points to global core goods inflation, and 0.3 percentage points to overall core inflation, during the first half of 2024.”[17] How the situation will play out remains an open question.

Looks like the billions of dollars that the U.S. let Iran have did not do much to improve their economy. Iran's leaders have no idea how to run a country or an economy. They have had six straight years of double-digit inflation, according to the Brits. They may be in worse shape than Russia.

I've read credible sources for at least two and a half years saying that they were on the verge of economic collapse. And they weren't exaggerating. But still it doesn't happen. I don't know what to think. I wouldn't be surprised if it occurred in short order or never did. It seems that nations have figured out a way to work around sanctions, much like the Russians.

Part of the JCPOA was simple economic integration. They still have about a hundred million educated people and a more diverse economy than the Gulf States, although the Iranian economy is hurting significantly.

Hard to know what may happen. I'm sure the piece is very credible but I've read similar pieces for years

If I'm not mistaken, those billions never made it to Iran. I think we were able to claw them back after the attack on Israel.

Iran's navy will probably not be threatening anyone anytime soon. They just lost a destroyer, which capsized while repairs were ongoing at a port. Two officers were killed. Iran's first reaction is to blame Israel for a cyber attack on the remotely-controlled vessel. (Iran had previously developed a cyber attack method that was used against western cargo ships.)
