Time to reprise the Yakov Smirnoff line. Other nations fine tech companies for illegally collecting user data. Not so our good friends spanning Europe and Asia. A magistrate at Moscow’s Tagansky district court fined Google about $164,200 after the company repeatedly refused to store personal data on Russian citizens inside the country. Google was previously fined over the same charges in August 2021 and June 2022. The company declined to comment. Google also was ordered to pay a fine of about $32,800 in August for failing to delete allegedly false information about the conflict in Ukraine. Of course, before we mock Russia, we should note that millions support someone who wants to bring that model of governance here. I'm not sure I can criticize Russia for that ... as I recall, one of the demands that the US government made on TikTok was to store US data in the US.
