Expect the worst and pray for the best. Next season there are so many things that can go wrong causing Lagway to be the starter. I would be fine with Napier grabbing another transfer QB for depth, maybe a former 3-star or another PWO.
We kept the 2 big dogs in this class - Lagway & McCray. I'm hoping they can become dual leaders of the team much like Tebow & Spikes were in their time.
It really does give Billy some excuses if he starts DJ and we have a losing season. Hey guys I was preparing for 2025 because we will only have DJ for max 3 seasons. What happens if he plays Mertz and goes 5-7 and then has a bad 2025 because DJ is learning. Think he’s screwed either way.
I’d rather see DJ get some serious reps, whether starting or not. I give Mertz a lot of credit for exceeding expectations and Maybe 2024 will be different, but Mertz can’t run and he isn’t a particularly good long passer. You can’t beat good teams if you can’t do those two things. Guys like Milroe and Daniels give you a whole different dimension. Granted DJ isn’t likely to be at that level out of the box. He isn’t going to be as good as AR’s final year - so expect something similar with a tougher schedule.
Today was definitely up & down after a super tough season. But... did anyone else notice how hard the recruiting sites were pushing our kids to flip? Now I'm sure it wasn't just UF, but look at the start from Waller on down. Waller went to a game and BOOM... every other day he was on flip watch. Then honestly I wonder if On3 paid X to flip to Texas, they were on that story every single day, bashing CBN etc. Also look at the lies told about DJ & LJ. I think these services are in it for a LOT more than clicks. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if something fishy wasn't going on.
I would be looking at portal players who 1) were from the states of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama and 2) who we finished second in the recruiting process.
This is how I see it as well - or he clouds flip to DJ mid year if we start slow otherwise he may never have DJ as his starter if we go 5-7 next season
How Meyer used Tebow in 2006 was ideal. Tim was a wildcat QB moving the chains on the ground, and occasionally threw. Against P5 opponents, Tim was 6-12 passing for 77 yards and 3 TDs. Rushing, he had 73 attempts for 360 yards and 5 TDs. He was a valuable contributor but was not the starter or even 1A and 1B. This was perfect for Tim, as he was fully prepared for 2007. But as Tegator said, it may have much to do with how quickly Florida gets out of the box. If we can start off 4-1 or 5-0, the Mertz clearly earned the opportunity to start for the season. OTOH, if we lose to Miami Texas A&M Miss State and/or UCF, it's up to Billy whether to put Lagway in, as it is clearly in Billy's best interest to do so, because if we start off 2-3, it could very well finish 4-8, 3-9 or 2-10, and Billy is gone gone gone. Billy will realize his job is on the line, however, and may keep Graham in there to give him the best chance to win, rather than throwing Lagway to the wolves. Damned difficult choice if you were Billy. He has not only himself to think about, he also has his staff. Strickland would also be feeling the heat...
The issue is the offensive line. Lagway can't do anything if 3 defenders are in his face at the snap.
Lol. Something tells me he is going to do well wherever he ends up and the Gator nation response will be wtf.......
I doubt BN or any coach will use a player to “audition” for the NFL. In my view, Mertz has no decent shot playing in the NFL. I like him and am glad he is a Gator and a warrior, but his skill sets do not bode well for the NFL.
Daniels is a 5th year senior and Milroe is a junior. Lagway needs to be eased into the position, Mertz returning sets it up perfectly.
