I really enjoyed this. Replete with Office quotes, but has a really great section starting about 8-9 minutes in. Kicks off with Dwight's quote about idiots, then provides some really insightful commentary about how to spot them and then how to find people at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Some of his commentary on idiots (weird formatting, copied from youtube transcript):

the best way to spot an idiot
look for the person who is cruel
    let me explain
when we see someone who doesn't look
like us or sound like us or act like us
or Love Like Us or Live Like Us the
    first thought that crosses almost
everyone's brain is rooted in either
    fear or judgment or both
    that's evolution
we survived as a species by being
suspicious of things that we aren't
    familiar with
in order to be kind we have to shut down
that animal Instinct and force our brain
    to travel a different pathway
    empathy and compassion are evolved
states of being they require the mental
    capacity
to step past our most Primal urges

    and a few minutes later:
I'm here to tell you that when someone's
path through this world is marked with
acts of Cruelty they have failed the
first test of an advanced Society
they never forced their animal brain to
evolve past its first instinct they
never forged new mental Pathways to
overcome their own instinctual fears and
so their thinking and problem solving
will lack the imagination and creativity
that the kindest people have in spades
over my many years in politics and
business I have found one thing to be
    universally true
the kindest person in the room
    is often the smartest

That is great stuff - have a friend that works under that office and is always trying to tell me I should pay more attention to JB. Looks like he is correct

I like this. Thinking through people I know I think this holds up pretty well. Unless they're from Miami or New York. lol

Hard to tell, but does he mean “smartest” with respect to EQ? Is it fair to sort of say low EQ / high IQ cannot be effective leaders? His comment about “evolution” implies that these are choices. It is entirely possible that a high IQ person (eg high functioning on the spectrum) does not have the same brain pathways for EQ.

This guy is the most hated and ridiculed Illinois Governor in recent Illinois history. He is governor because of the Chicago machine, but he is vilified by 1/2 the state. Even the convicted former Gov Blagojevich polls hirer.

Many times, the kindest is the slowest person.
Empathy isn’t necessarily an evolved piece of us. Mothers and fathers have shown empathy towards their progeny for as long as we can know our own history.
This is liberal gibberish to sound like we should all lie down and allow idiots to walk all over us.
    Personally I hate the message.
It’s a tough world out there. Watch out for idiot politicians who want you to stop using common sense for survival.

Guy who tried to argue against mathematics because he hated what a poll said cites...polls. BTW, the last approval rating I could find for him had him at 52%.

High EQ and IQ do tend to be correlated. Causation is always a tough question. Nature vs. nurture issues, as always.

You have to be a really special kind of individual to think "cruelty is bad" is a poor idea.

You have to be a really special kind of individual to think the above statement is off topic.

More fuel for my theory that eventually conservatives will say Christianity is too soft and cucked and they will become Islamists because they think its more hardcore. "The meek shall inherit the earth? Sounds gay, dude."

What does Christianity have to do with my comment?

I mean you are calling a basic element of Judeo-Christian morality liberal gibberish.

Can a reverent Muslim be anti-Semitic? They revere many Jews as prophets, and are also Semitic. I know, silly. Very silly. Embarrassing to type

JB is a funny guy. Used to see him a few times a week when I worked at 1871. The tech incubator he founded. Presented to him once. He was a great audience.

That wasn't the only message. There was also the ludicrous "kindness = intelligence" claim, to buttress the first part.

It's not a particularly toxic message, but it is just about useless.

Whatever. It's a graduation speech. I'm sure I've heard worse, and equally sure I'll remember this one as well as I remember all the rest of em.

I linked this story in another thread, and your post reminded me of it.

Exclusive — Rising Conservative Influencer Pedro Gonzalez Regularly Espoused Racist and Anti-Semitic Sentiments in Private Messages

That was not the only time Gonzalez pointed to Spengler. In a September 15, 2019, message to the group, Gonzalez again cited the Nazi philosopher, quoting his critiques of Christianity’s political utility. “’Christian theology,’ wrote Oswald Spengler, ‘is the grandmother of Bolshevism,’” Gonzalez wrote. “Whether you agree with Spengler is not the point; the point is that Spengler was grappling with the fact that Christianity has been emasculated and therefore it is not clear that it can help us in mass politics.”
