My problem is that the whole process now is completely secretive and too much corruption can take place. ESPN even hypes it up like that with the sleuth music and shots from inside the committee room. Like I said earlier, it's way too easy to manipulate the whole system when you have 13 people together in private behind closed doors compared to 60+ AP voters and 60+ head coaches spread out all over the country. Honestly that was a much more legitimate way to do it. And the votes were public. It's funny you bring up Liberty. The CFP committee chair was asked why Liberty was selected for the NY6 over SMU who had much more impressive metrics, SOS, etc, and his answer was "Liberty just continued to win". Uhhh....
Why is ok if football polls choose someone else but a committee doing the same is wrong? and it's not really secretive, we know who the people on the committee are, over on warchant a bunch of noles are trying to find out where they live so they can threaten them, class acts.
After the playoff selections are made, the rest don't matter anymore. My point was Liberty had the same record as fsu, and as legitimate a gripe as fsu. You act like the old way was better because more people voted. Nonsense, sportswriters have regional biases based on who they cover. Back in 1993 the process didn't include how each voter voted. That didn't come until later. Plus, they are basing their decisions on scores of games, while not necessarily knowing what happened during them. As pointed out earlier, the AP opted out almost 20 years ago.
I would feel the same based on what I saw all year. They played in a bad ACC conference and had a bad strength of schedule. LSU: 9-3 Southern Miss: 3-9 Boston College: 6-6 (won by 2) Clemson: 8-4 (won in OT) VT:6-6 Syracuse: 6-6 Duke: 7-5 WF: 4-8 Pitt: 3-9 Miami: 7-5 North Alabama: 3-8 Gators: 5-7 Louisville: 10-3 Total Team Win-Loss 74-79 The five games prior to playing FSU, the Gators gave up an average of 317 yards passing and 2+ TDS and total yard average of 528 yards with almost 5 TDs per game. FSU's backup QB against the Gators only threw for 134 yards with 0 TDs and the team total was 224 yards with 3 TDs (24 total points). Against Louisville it wasn't any better: 55 yards passing 0 TD's (if the Louisville DBs could catch there would have been several INTs) and total of 274 yards and 1 TD (16 total points). These things are not things that indicate FSU should have been a top four team that should have made the playoffs, especially with backup QB numbers. People want to compare them with 2014 OSU team that got in with 3rd string QB. Well, that team won their conference championship game against Wisconsin 59-0. Their 3rd string QB threw for 257 yards and 3 TDs. That is not a valid comparison.
@uf1998 Do you think Florida's Second rate school is better than UGA? They're ranked ahead of Georgia. If so, then surely you must also believe they are better than Washington, Texas, and Michigan. Perhaps even Bama too. Do you actually, really believe this? Do you actually maintain that the holes would beat any of those teams without Travis? If not, then you admit you're mistaken. If, however, you do believe this.... How much are you willing to wager on it? Straight up, no points, dawgs > holes. PM me ...
Talent difference is staggering between the ACC/SEC. Taken from the 2023 rankings and adding the new additions to each conference. One added quality, the other has beens. Previous years are pretty similar at a glance. 2023 Recruiting Rankings SEC Rank ACC Rank Alabama 1 Miami 7 Georgia 2 Clem 11 Tex 3 FSU 19 Okla 5 UNC 30 LSU 6 Louisv 31 Tenn 10 VT 39 UF 13 NCST 43 TAMU 15 Stanford 44 USCe 16 Pitt 51 Aub 18 Wake 54 Ark 22 Duke 56 Miss 23 BC 61 MissSt 27 GT 62 UK 32 UVA 64 Mizzou 34 Cal 79 Vandy 52 Cuse 88
As to your secretive argument, here is the article that describes exactly what took place during the selection: 'Holy s---, this is really going to suck to do this': Inside the CFP committee's most controversial decision
Sounds pretty transparent to me, other than what their actual votes were. ACC had more people on the committee than the SEC and more from the midwest than anywhere. Don't see why it would be considered biased towards the SEC. Plus, they said why uga got left out as well.
Ohio State only had one loss this year, and it was to the number one team in the playoffs. Plus, their strength of schedule was higher than fsu's. They have as much of a claim this year as fsu did in 93, maybe more so.
SIAP... I take delicious joy in both them and UGa getting the shaft. And I go with UGa got it more than FSU. But to the OP: what I wanted every single year is a scenario where there were no fence sitters regarding the brokenness of the playoff system. And as we all know (by now) it was the ACC commissioner along with two others who screwed FSU by delaying the 12-team format. I do not believe there are any fence sitters regarding the silliness of the 4-team system. And a sort of tangent (but not really) we have instant replay because the refs basically screwed UF in order to get an ACC team a NY's day bowl. That WAS the reason. End of conversation. And so, for FSU to get a taste of what it is like to have "powers that be" not being fair or even biased as H__L, well then, that to me is either karma or irony. Your pick.
YAHTZEE!!! Irony or karma, I think it's both. Irony for their own commissioner voting in a way that prevented the change in numbers this year. Karma as a payback for them pussing out on joining the toughest conference in college football when they had the opportunity because it was too tough. Toughness of conference and strong OOC schedule was the difference maker. This attitude by fsu fans is what you get when everyone gets a participation trophy as a kid, regardless of the fact you're the worst person on the team and told you're just as good as everyone else. Somehow you figure everyone is equal because mommy said so. In conclusion, "F fsu."
Good read. Surprising how close they came to sqeezing out the SEC altogether. Now THAT would have been a bad joke.
^^^The more I think about it, the more invested I am, in Georgia curb stomping these whiny pretenders into next year, to squash the whine the hell out of them. Seriously--given that article, it begs the question--how much does the SEC have to dominate, for the committee to give it proper defermence??? How was that even a debate? FSU eeking out ugly wins against candy ass schedule, and they almost locked SEC out completely???? After how many years of SEC having a stranglehold on the natty? Apparently, had Travis NOT gone down, they'd have given FSU a spot, and pitted the 2 best teams in the country-- Bama v UGA-- in a bowl against each other while the 4 lesser schools vied for *natty*. SMH...
It does stink for them, but there is no way they would beat any of the top teams at this point. It is probably worse for Georgia though. They have to feel how we felt when the Tebow undefeated team lost to BAMA in the SEC championship game. Knowing you are the top two teams, but only one team makes it. Their misery is my only consolation for this season.
They'll bring up that Jordan Travis didn't play as the reason they got curb stomped. It'll only matter to them then.
We would've kicked the shat out of Texas had we played them for the NC, as we were clearly no worse than the second best team that season. Losing Carlos Dunlap before the game against Bama was devastating, so we know what it's like to lose one of our best players. Good chance uga is one of the top two, at worst, this season.
The arguments that the Nole Troll is using are all bogus. The only legit argument, IMO, is that FSU won all their games and did what was necessary to deserve to be selected. And that is incontrovertible. However, there’s no salient argument to overcome the overwhelming likelihood that they would be curb-stomped by the teams actually selected (or the teams right behind FSU). Instead, it’s just whining. Understandable whining, but still whining.
