No. It is in the NCAA's protocol that the committee is allowed to exclude a team that loses a key player which affects their ability to perform at a high level. CFP grew ‘concerned’ about Florida State during ACC championship game (msn.com)
Well you’re right about that, they stink. Your sisters notwithstanding, you were here in 98 I am assuming? That means you saw DockettGate, maybe the Swindle? No love for FSU or do I feel sorry for them. Let me explain how much I hate them. Their not getting in is more enjoyable for me then them losing it because it hurts them more and also we will have a good game to watch. Hell, we could have beat them. I hate them so much that I actually hope they did deserve to go and it makes it that much painful for them. No Gator is a Nole sympathizer. Not to Dyllards sponsored Free Shoes U, nope. Step back brah. Lol
You are so wrong!! Sorta funny. You don't know your history and perhaps that's why you are swayed by so many specious arguments. They did have bowl tie-ins but they also matched up the top 2 teams outside the Big 10 and Pac 10. This started w/ Bama vs Miami the year prior. FSU and Nebraska were the top 2 teams before the final game. NOT WEST VIRGINIA even though WVU was undefeated and FSU had a loss. Nebraska was tied into the Orange, so FSU vs Nebraska was the NC game. WVU was sent to the Sugar where we destroyed them. So yeah- it's actually a great analogy. It just doesn't work for you so you ignore it.
It’s not that I don’t realize that F$U got screwed. It’s that I just don’t care. They chose the ACC 3 decades ago. Time to pay for it.
It's not a good analogy because both major polls had FSU ranked above WVU- in the only rankings system that was used back then (the transparent kind, where you can actually see how everyone voted). In other words, 1 loss or not, the rankings system that was implemented at the time thought FSU was better than WVU and thus FSU got picked for the NC. That's completely not the case this year where both major polls have FSU higher yet FSU did NOT get selected thanks to some mysterious committee locked up in a conference room with no transparency and no accountability. It's much easier to manipulate things with 13 people locked in a private room than it is to get 65 AP voters and 50 coaches to vote a certain way. That's why it smells. I just looked up both teams for that '93 season, and I guess I can see why the voters were enamored with FSU. Their one loss was on the road vs #2 and it was a close game, and the rest of their games were pretty much blowouts, against a pretty solid schedule. WVU looks like they had to scrape by in a lot of their games. I also see FSU has a common opponent edge in three different games. FSU beat Maryland by 29 WVU beat Maryland by 5 FSU beat Miami by 18 WVU beat Miami by 3 FSU beat UF by 12 WVU lost to UF..... by a million lol Sorry but it's just not a very good comparison, at all. This year's Alabama is not some super dominant team. Their loss was at home. They had several close calls with bad teams and needed an absolute miracle to pull out another. And if we're using common opponents, FSU gets the edge there as well. I know you think I'm an FSU apologist, whatever. I just like to be objective and factual. I get it, we're supposed to hate FSU, but if you take off the orange and blue glasses for a second, this is a glaring screw job. Turn on the TV, read the articles, watch the videos posted above. The national media and pretty much anyone outside of Gainesville and Miami are echoing this.
FSU has screwed Miami 2000 and Notre Dame 1993 out of national championships. They can cry harder. If Clemson was in their spot this season and got left out, there would be no sympathy. The ACC has been a running joke for its entire existence.
So, in the bolded part the criterion favoring fsu is okay with you, but the criterion used today, which includes strength of schedule and the fact a critical player is injured and can't play leaving fsu out, isn't? By your logic the record is the only thing that matters, not who you play. If that's the case, Liberty should be in. Did you think that UCF should've been in?
No way you aren't a nole. No self respecting Gator would so adamantly be supporting fsu over this. In your opinion fsu got screwed. Many teams have gotten screwed in the past, and fsu contributed to several of those. I, too, have family that went to fsu. I hate the noles just as much, anyway, and not that fond of the family members either.
RE the original question: Would I feel bad for them if it was anyone but FSU? Yes, I would, because I am a caring, empathetic human being. But it's not anyone else, it's FSU so I find it delicious, delightful, heart-cockle-warming to see their discomfort.
No FSU did not get screwed. The system was always about protecting the power$ of the sport and FSU/ACC isn’t on the same level as Bama/SEC and Texas/B12 when it came down to it. We have a committee for a reason (same as to why we have subjective calls on the field), so we can “protect” the current system.
@uf1998 Where's your tear filled thread for UGA? They're actually, almost indisputably, one of the 4 best teams in the country. 2x time still reigning national champion. Lost only 1 game in 2 seasons, in the toughest and best conference in the nation... ...and that one loss was by 3, to the SEC champ, in the SECCG. ...to the historically best team in CFB. I don't feel bad for either, but if anyone's getting screwed here, it's Georgia, not PretenderSU.
After weeks of shadenfreuding on the board, if FSU somehow manages to upset Georgia - and it is recognized as the people’s champ - can you imagine the teeth-gnashing around here ? It’ll be UCF 2.0!
Interesting. For what it's worth, I think SWAC was better than West Virginia that year, and I think most folks probably agree. I think Notre Dame was better than West Virginia that year also; and they had the head-to-head tie-breaker. The timing of the losses was crucial back then. You may recall that, back in 2004, the AP asked to be removed from the selection process, so they are no longer a factor. The coaches have obviously all agreed to go along with the playoff committee as the primary selection tool. You talk of manipulation, but even in the coaches poll, the difference was extremely close to the point of it not being egregious if one team was picked over the other. For those that don't get how close the voting was, go look at the difference in total votes between Texas, Alabama, and SWAC and compare that difference to the difference between FLORIDA and Michigan in 2006. The bottom line is that the opinion amongst the coaches was not as clear cut as you might believe. I think SWAC won by 21 and Bama won by 14. I have no problem with the idea of SWAC with Travis making the postseason. I thought they were a really good team. Do you think it's inconceivable that, using this game as a comparison, people might think that Travis makes up more than a 7-point swing for SWAC? If not, this game doesn't help SWAC's argument, it helps Alabama's. If you do think it's inconceivable, explain why. That factor is literally part of the selection criteria, so are people mad at the criteria or are people mad that it wasn't applied the way it should have been? - we've established that it's not unreasonable for a 1-loss conference champion to be selected higher than an undefeated conference champion - we've established that only 4 teams could get selected when it seems like there may have been at least 6 worthy competitors - we've established that the selection criteria and the people that implement them are the authority - we've established that a rule exists that essentially allows for penalizing a team for losing a key player - it appears that the loss of said key player had a significant impact on the team's play (maybe this is still a point of contention for some folks) The only thing we haven't established is how there was a "screw job." Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
