I do not like FSU, let me make that perfectly clear. However, I don't hate them as much as a lot of you here. Probably because both my sisters went there. But the last 24 hours I've been reading and watching a lot of things and holy crap FSU really did get royally screwed. It's kind of unbelievable actually. Pretend for a moment that this is not FSU but some other school, say, Virginia Tech, who went out and won all their games including two against the SEC away from home, beat LSU worse than Bama, and was still snubbed by Bama despite how poorly Bama played in half their games and the fact they have a loss while VT doesn't. It just smells to the high heavens. I really don't like this sport as much as I once did. There's so much wrong with it, and there's so much corruption. When I watch Gator basketball or volleyball or soccer I don't feel like the corruption is there, but college football has become an entirely different animal and it's completely out of control. Check out these videos. This whole thing is crazy.
FSU is a bad football team. They didn’t look like a top 4 team even when Travis was playing. Their only impressive win was against LSU week 1. I don’t feel sorry for them. They should just join the SEC or big 10 but they won’t because they know they would be a 4 loss team at best
We've seen the committee put non conference winners in over conference winners. They are supposed to pick the 4 BEST TEAMs, NOT the 4 MOST DESERVING. 1993 and 2000 It's happened before and they benefited from it. They can stop with the whining.
No. I don't want to watch that in a NC Semifinal. And I personally think Georgia (who I hate more than FSU) should be there over Texas. Those two teams in Atlanta are the two best teams in the country and you're not going to change my mind on that. That game was just different than the others in terms of the talent on the field and the physicality and that goes back to last week too (UM/OSU).
Big time undefeated teams have been screwed before, this is nothing new. If it was anyone else that played in a patsy conference then I would still point and laugh.
FSU wasn’t a top 4 team with Jordan Travis, they’re certainly not one without him. FSU had the 55th ranked SOS, Alabama had the 5th. The ACC was a glorified G5 conference this season. The committee picks the four best teams, Alabama was deserving over FSU because they played a real schedule. They picked the four best P5 conference champions. The committee got it right. FSU was done a favor. They can go to the OB and maybe UGA doesn’t take it seriously or they can get blown out by UGA. No one will remember. Or they can go to the Rose Bowl and get blown out because Michigan is absolutely going to be dialed in and everyone will remember.
Their play since Travis got knocked out is why they are not in. That team now would have a 0% chance of winning a NC. Had Travis' injury taken place late in the game against Louisville, I believe they would be in the playoffs. W's have never been the end all be all with the NCAA. Look no further than FSU's first NC crowning in '93 when a 11-0 Nebraska and a 11-0 WVU finished second and third respectively behind the 11-1 Noles.
I didn't watch the videos, and I hate FSU, but I feel I have a relatively unbiased take on things after decades of these type debates.. The key phrase that the NCAA b-ball committee uses often applies here... Body of Work...(Wins and losses and overall SOS.) Don't focus only on the record. That's a simplistic and simple-minded way to see things. After all, Liberty is undefeated. My view is to be a top team you need to beat a team that would be NC worthy if NOT for your loss. Bama beat UGA. UGA would be in the playoff if not for Bama. Michigan beat tOSU. tOSU would be in the playoff if not for Michigan. Texas beat Bama- who is in the playoff. Washington beat Oregon twice. Oregon would be in the playoff if not for Washington All 4 have a quality win. Two have a quality loss. So who did FSU beat?? 3 loss LSU. 3 loss Louisville (who didn't play the ACC top teams.) 4 loss Clemson. Many other 4-6 loss teams So NO quality wins. Maybe 2 good wins. (Clemson and LSU.) Talking about the loss... Bama lost to a great team. (A playoff team.) Texas lost to a very good team. (Oklahoma.) These are quality losses. So by any measure- FSU doesn't deserve to be there. While they won all their games- so did West Virginia in 93 yet FSU went to the OB despite their one loss that year.
Problem is you used Va Tech as an example, which is another ACC team. The correct question should have been if FSU had played in the SEC or Big 10, went undefeated and won the conference championship, and the answer would have been, of course they would be deserving.
In the NFL the best teams don't always make the playoffs. Conference winners plus the best won loss records get it regardless of injuries.
But not in the 4 team playoff era. This is the first time for sure. And say what you want about the ACC but they played not one but two non-conference games vs the SEC. That has to count for something. The games have to matter. Otherwise what really is the point? The three videos above are all SEC guys too. So there's no bias there. It shouldn't matter what team you root for, this stinks to the high heavens. Sorry that's just how I feel. Maybe it's the Bama fatigue in me, but as ESPN's metrics guy Bill Connelly pointed out the other day, this is Bama's worst team in 15 years and they had to scrape by vs bad teams and even needed an outright miracle in another. They are behind FSU in both major polls, Coaches and AP voters. But behind closed doors in a locked Dallas conference room? Those 13 CFP committee members with no transparency? Abracadabra! Bama is in! I'm sorry but it doesn't pass the smell test.
First- who cares that they beat us. We lost to Arkansas!! And we didn't have our first string QB. Read my post as far as why it doesn't "stink to high heavens." Bama BEAT GA! No one had beaten GA in 2+ years. That counts for something. Where is the top team that FSU beat? LSU is the best and they are good, but certainly not great.
FSU played only 4 teams during the season with a winning record! I'd hold the same contempt for any other team trying to get in with a record like that.
To answer the question- I actually DO feel bad for the players. But feelings don't change facts. And the fact is that FSU didn't deserve to be in there due to quality of schedule.
FSU was shot in the foot by the ACC commissioner when he voted to not expand the CFP to 12 teams this year. Had he done so, no one would be upset and FSU would be in the playoffs. This needs to repeatedly be mentioned to FSU fans and whoever wants to say they were screwed. They were screwed alright - by their own commissioner.
But that's the problem- It's just speculation. It's not actual factual results. We have no idea what Norvell would've been able to cook up with a month to prepare. Penalizing an undefeated team for speculation is just absurd. If the Chiefs lost Mahomes just before the playoffs, they wouldn't boot the Chiefs from getting in. The Chiefs would get in based on what they had done during the entire season. College football is the only sport that does this. Everyone here thought Oregon would clobber double digit underdog Washington the other day, but look what happened? They actually played the game.
Travis being injured made the decision easy for the committee. If you watched any of their games, even when he was playing they looked mediocre. They should have lost and got bailed out by refs in multiple games. The game against us was the nail in the coffin. hypothetical question. Had the gators beat Missouri and Arkansas and still lost to FSU, would FSU be in the playoffs?
Objectively Objectively they were the weakest in the top 6 based on opponents W/L record and Bama had the best W/L The committee was tasked with seeding the best teams and only dropped them 1 spot 4 to 5. They dropped uga 5 spots. The other point is competitiveness and despite beating to FBS teams w/o JT they arent a competitive team offensively (reference the offensive production or lack there of the last 2 games) do you remember the 10yd 1st Q output vs UF? Imagine a game with less than 50 for the game. There are teams in the past undefeated that didnt get a opportunity to play for a championship WV for sportswriters fave the opportunity to fsu instead If another team was in their shies i wouldnt care more or less i just woukd know or understand the intricacies of why it is so delicious the wailing and anguish that is emanating from the cesspool on I-10
