I was wrong. Over the past two years, I thought that indicting Trump and inciting a circle the wagons scenario for irrational and emotionally dominated consumers of Fox News would be a bad thing. But as it turns out, it has ensured the nomination of a guaranteed loser. I thought and hoped that the Republican party had seen the light about the fact that Trump was toxic and despised by not just 95% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans but also 65% of the crucial Independent voting block. Congratulations. Getting enough of a group of low information ignorant personality cult followers to unite via lawfare was brilliant. I can now relax knowing that the outcome of November is already decided and no longer stress about it. Every year that passes, I get more and more aware of the fact that we have too many people in this country that cannot see beyond their emotions to vote strategically and it was only a matter of time before that failing was taken advantage of.

He would have been the nominee no matter what, Republicans like him, certainly more than charisma-free weeners like DeSantis. When are Republicans going to accept any responsibility for anything related to Trump, its always blame someone else, or that they were tricked into it. Also, I'm not sure Trump is a guaranteed loser, he's probably still a coin flip chance to win. And the Democrats are pretty far from capable of 3D chess as you lay out here lol.

Republicans are adults and responsible for their own choices. The Democrats didn't pick Trump.

As a wannabe autocrat, Trump has employed both blackmail and threat of MAGA violence to make sure those that could depose him in the GOP will be too afraid to do so.

Trump would seem to be a guaranteed loser for the popular vote. But the Electoral College is always worrisome. Currently in the news is the fact that Biden could lose Michigan, due to its large number of Arab Americans, who aren’t exactly thrilled with Biden’s support of genocide in Gaza. I see that the world court stopped short of calling it genocide, and instead told Israel to try to “prevent genocide.” IOW close the barn doors after the horses have left the barn. Same thing that Biden told Israel: “Try to stop slaughtering innocent people.” In any case, just the fact that Trump could conceivably win the Electoral College shows the absolutely sorry state to which country has descended.

    Hi Vinn,
I enjoy your football posts much more!

I'm afraid that I have to agree with wg and lawyer on this one although I freely and openly admit as a progressive and a democrat
that what is ailing our country is certainly not exclusively the fault of Republicans.

I would like to think conservatives will come to their senses and hopefully (next cycle) ..... if their even is another election cycle.......
should Emperor Trump get elected.........will promote sane candidates that wish to keep a representative form of Gov't.

Or it's conceivable that the military could step in and depose Emperor Trump if there were no more elections. After all, military coups have been a common practice in banana republics.

I’m so tired of people coddling MAGA types. If only we had done X Y or Z people wouldn’t vote for Trump. That’s Bullshit. So much for accountability.

What’s more exasperating for me is that based on the OP’s posting history I don’t think he dislikes Trump for the same reasons that independents and Dems do - it’s simply because he doesn’t think he can win.

The two main opponents for Trump were Nikki and Ron. Neither one of them ran on real policy but chirped culture war priorities - Ron on gays, Nikki on the old south. The GOP is lost and has no point to exist so the actual candidate doesnt matter.

MAGA doesn’t want real policies. They want somebody to tell them they (MAGA) are better than the other guys (Elite, establishment, college educated, City dwellers, liberals, etc).

Chris Christie ran hard against Trump and on substantive policies. Look how well that worked for him.

It is the same reason my educated and successful wife watches real housewives. It makes her feel she is better than these rich crazy people. It drives me nuts.

There was a thought that Hillary wanted to run against trump as opposed to sensible sane candidates. She ran a horrible campaign in many ways but there is the possibility that the dems did choose trump.

Well sure, they did prefer Trump because he seemed beatable. Early on mainstream media enjoyed Trump because he absolutely destroyed all of the other republicans. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t entertaining. Nobody thought he could actually win though.

Having said all that Democrats had nothing to do with Trump getting the Republican nomination. You could argue that Hillary did a poor job campaigning by neglecting rust belt states she thought she had in the bag.

This is a lie. It will be a lie every single time someone says it. I cannot stand Trump and it has nothing to do with whether or not he can win.

Let me help everyone out who can't get this through their heads:

I don't think the Dems intentionally chose Trump although their incompetence was largely responsible for Trump's surprise victory. Hillary and the DNC also made multiple strategic errors. One of the most significant was putting in the fix for Hillary. Although she probably would have won the nomination anyway the impression that the DNC was putting their proverbial thumb on the scale alienated the supporters of Bernie Sanders to the point that rather than voting Clinton they stayed home or voted for a third party candidate like Jill Stein. The results were close enough in the swing states the votes of younger voters who turned out in much greater numbers in 2012 could have made a difference.

Similarly the Clinton campaign took the swing states that Trump managed to flip (WI, MI and PA) for granted and didn't devote sufficient time or resources especially in Wisconsin and Michigan and while in Pennsylvania focused more on trying to flip suburban women than shoring up support among blue collar households. As part of the same failed strategy the campaign tried and failed to flip AZ, NC, FL and even Texas. Rather than focusing on those states the campaign's resources could have been better spent in the swing states that she ended up losing.

And let's not forget the role of the Mainstream Media. Although demonized by the right the MSM was Trump's best friend at least early in the campaign. CNN, Fox and even MSNBC gave him the equivalent of millions of dollars in free advertising by televising almost all of his MAGA rallies in their entirety during the primary campaign although only Fox continued to do so during the general election campaign.

You forgot one important actor in the election. The FBI director, who announced at the eleventh hour, "Wait, we're investigating Hillary again!" I'm sure that was the last straw for some people already reluctant to vote for her. And Trump thanked him, as I recall, by firing him. Although he may have helped elect Trump, the director refused to get on his knees to him.
