It is fascinating how you think that you can own a country (it should be noted that Macron said no such thing). How very... authoritarian and colonial. Macron correctly pointed out that Greenland, as an autonomous territory of Denmark, is part of the EU. That is factually true. He did not say that the EU "owns" them.

The orange god wants to be an emperor, including the expansionist part. His worshippers love it. How do they propose to PAY for these invasions? ( or is that where cuts to medicare, medicaid, social security will go?)

When did we ever OWN the Panama Canal?! And, since when does the United States thumb its nose at sovereignty. We have gone to war after war to protect other nation’s sovereignty, and now—because Trump flippantly suggests a return to colonialism, you’re all in?!?! Wow!!

The Mercator projection strikes again. How to Lie with Maps should be required reading. Greenland looks huge on a map, but its about the size of the DRC in Africa.

So will an arch be built for the military parades to celebrate the expansion of the empire? Perhaps march pow's and loot from the newly conquered territories in those parades. Think of the ratings!

The problem is in the details. We failed twice to conquer Canada. Not sure what makes anyone think we’d be successful a third time, particularly with the remainder of NATO fighting against us.

You'd think there would be some humility after getting rinsed by some goat herders in Afghanistan

Colonialism because I want something entertaining on my TV might just be the worst justification ever. But then again, that does seem to be one of the primary underpinning values of Trumpism.

Hasn’t Russia’s foray into Ukraine shown us how conquering territory is expensive. The ROI is never going to be positive.

You are aware that Russian or Third Reich-style imperial isn’t some freaking action TV show, right? Do you think it’s entertainment? Is your sense or morality, decency, and love of what this country should be so debased to fealty to one man?

Invasion of Austria, Czechoslovakia, (half) of Poland, France, and other regions of the Baltic for “nAtIoNaL sEcUrItY” wasn’t entertaining.

Russian aggression in Ukraine, sabre-rattling in the Baltic States, Poland, and Finald aren’t “fun.”

At best, a lot of young people will die for America’s imperialist romp. At worst, it’ll be an absolute bloodbath that leads to even worse calamity.

“Shining city on a hill” indeed. I wish you all would wake the F up before we compromise everything that actually makes this country great….

A better size comparison for Americans is Alaska in which Greenland is roughly 25% larger.

But who knows why Trump thinks Greenland is important. It’s never been important in its history except as a stopping point for early explorers and housing whalers. He probably latched onto someone’s offhand comment and like the eating the cats and dogs he just runs with it.

I'm 99% convinced that it's because it looks big on a map, and his tariff obsession got him McKinley-pilled, and he was the last person to expand our territory meaningfully.

I had the same questions. What I've seen regarding its importance is shipping lanes, natural resources (rare earth minerals and possibly reserves of oil and natural gas), and its strategic location. Things I've seen that I didn't know before - Harry Truman offered to buy Greenland in 1946; FDR got an agreement with Denmark in 1941 which paved the way for U.S. military military bases; and that Eisenhower expanded the operations Thule Air Base.

Here's an article as it relates to the Truman administration:

    https://www.npr.org/2019/08/22/7531...n-really-try-to-buy-greenland-back-in-the-day

All this took place in confidence but even then — as now — the idea shocked the Danes. Here's how the AP's W. Dale Nelson described the National Archive documents' account of the exchange:

Secretary of State James Byrnes made the offer to visiting Danish Foreign Minister Gustav Rasmussen in New York on Dec. 14, 1946, according to a telegram from Byrnes to the U.S. Legation in Copenhagen.

After discussing other security arrangements for Greenland, Byrnes said he told Rasmussen that perhaps an outright sale to the United States ″would be the most clean-cut and satisfactory.″

″Our needs ... seemed to come as a shock to Rasmussen, but he did not reject my suggestions flatly and said that he would study a memorandum which I gave him,″ he said."

I remember Trump's commentary at his 2019 4th of July parade when he praised the takeover of British airports by the Continental Army.
