Those 2 black guys who were brutalized by the Goon Squad in Mississippi should’ve taken OPs advice and tried being more polite to police…maybe being polite and respectful would’ve stopped the cops from shoving an object into their behinds and shooting them in the mouth.

If you read a story about a cop shooting someone who got out of his car immediately after getting pulled over would you put the blame on the cop for having an itchy trigger finger or would you blame the victim for not just staying in his car?

99% of cops are good people.

 

People should be polite. But people do not have to give up their rights or explain themselves to police as some virtue signaling display of deference. Quite the opposite, you can be respectful and respect "the law" while not being complicit in giving up your rights. You got out of a jam this time, but that doesn't mean if there is a next time it will work--and it certainly doesn't mean your N=1 experience demonstrates that others will have the same experience.

I do think it's pretty far fetched that any cop would shoot in that scenario but I found that part of the story interesting because sometimes people just do weird things because they're nervous.

 

I had more interaction when I was younger but I never had any trouble with the police. How much because I was polite, how much because I was an educated white guy ... I don't know.
"Hello officer, is it OK to hitchhike here?"
"Nope, it's not legal anywhere in the state. But if you walk right past that next exit, you'll have a better chance of a ride."

If a cop shoot somebody because the cop is nervous, without more, the cop is 100% at fault. If the cop thinks he sees a gun or something that puts his life or others in peril, that’s a whole different story. But that wasn’t the hypothetical.

 

Sorry I meant more 51 getting out of the car or just generally people who were pulled over doing something that could be considered "not complying" when really they were just nervous.

I wasn't trying to make a cops are bad point. I have a lot of respect for cops and what they do mainly because I wouldn't want to do that job.

The interesting thing to meis what 51 is putting forward as an example of following the cop's directions could have resulted in someone being killed in slightly different circumstances. If someone were to start to get out of the car, and their timing was poor such that the cop was getting close to the vehicle, it's conceivable the cop could have felt threatened, couldn't see his hands, etc.

In that situation I'd be willing to bet we'd see a few "this wouldn't have happened if he just stayed in the car" responses.
