Hello guys! haven't been on here for a while but saw this post about auto insurance.
I have been a member of USAA for years and have had auto insurance with them until a couple of years ago. Their rates have just gone thru the roof. Many years ago, Consumer Reports had an article on auto insurance and the need to do rate checks once a year. I do it every year or so and USAA is consistently the highest company out there, for the same exact coverage. Here is a rate check I did just a few weeks ago. If you are not checking costs, you are losing money.
    Auto insurance quotes 6 months
    11/1/2023 Wednesday

3 vehicles Two Drivers, no accidents, no tickets
    1-2017 Honda Ridgeline Full coverage
    2-2006 VW Jetta Liability
    3-1998 Toyota 4runner Liability
    1-USAA = $ 2,229.66 6 months (monthly payments)
    2-State Farm $2,013.51 6 monthly (monthly payments)
3-Hartford $1,148.00 6 months with monthly payments or $1,085.00 one payment
    4-Progressive $1,175.00 6 months -monthly payments or $968.00 one payment .
5-AllState $732.85 (estimated, based on 3 vehicles mileage) 6 months

    Highest USAA $2,229.96

    Lowest=Progressive $968.00
*****AllState just in $732.85 6 months (based on mileage)

Difference between USAA and Progressive= $1,261.96 per 6 months or $2,523.92 per year

Difference between USAA and AllState with Mileage rate $1496.81 per 6 months or $2993.62 per year

Rates are going up everywhere, but Florida is out of control. You can make the argument that wind exposure in Florida is legit, and to some extent home prices. But cars aren't more expensive here. Nor is repairing them. Are there more UM drivers in Florida? Probably. But this is a Florida problem. Insurance companies are fleeing the state. Why?

Again, the point I was making was to look at the actual coverage to see what the increases in premiums are attributive to.

I'm not a lawyer hater. My dad was a lawyer. I have a lot of close friends that are lawyers. But it's kind of funny when these threads pop up and lawyers are like "hey don't blame us."

Report: Florida leads nation in lawsuits per capita – by a wide margin

Yes this was ramped up by the changes that went into effect in March

I think those are at high risk for theft, typically driven fast, and it’s 9 years old as many have noted the older a car is the “less safe it is” and more expensive to repair and find parts for.

Actually rates of PiP can be affected by lawyers, some make sure people use every penny of PIP to make sure their client has full medical evals to look any “possible injury” from the accident.
Haven’t you heard the commercials talking about injuries not shown on X-rays etc. Thanks Morgan and Morgan, the pain can last a lifetime..
There are plenty of guys in cahoots with less than ethical Doctors who will see people post accident until the PIP is gone.
That doesn’t include the scam doctors who were billing ins for accidents that never happened.

Ortho PA friend of mine says that some people exhaust their insurance money at the behest of their attorney looking for more significant injuries to claim and then don't have anything left to treat a legitimate but more minor injury going forward. They are left paying out of pocket or just suffering with a foot or leg injury because they chased a bigger fish.

Best part of this thread is you can see who the lawyers are in here by the responses.

John Morgan's ilk will typically want democrat / liberal politicians in office since they are more sympathetic to his style of law. But he has been known to send a few bucks to republican candidates as well (but he does suggest, or in a less polite way, demand that his associates donate money to the democratic candidate that he prefers.

On the insurance side, my rates have gone up a little but I do know some people with very high rates and they are usually the cautious ones that have million dollar umbrella policies or something.

My question is, why is Florida climbing so fast comparatively?
Not exactly an apples to apples with the Op, but my 2011 Acura TSX is just over 1k a year here in VA. So that barely a quarter of what he’s paying, and it’s only gone up maybe 20 percent the last five years.

My cousin owned an Allstate agency in Cape Coral. We used him when USAA got too expensive with our auto insurance. He told me more than once to blame the Morgans and Morgans for the cost of auto insurance. When we sold our home they would not write insurance at the time on our new home.

They used to be near the bottom of insurance cost, And their service was excellent. My wife worked there at one time.

Car insurance is way up everywhere, not just the state of Florida. Go look at the past 12 months CPI reports.

Hurricane Ian alone caused a huge spike.

But I know, it’s not fun to look at fact, bash the dude that has nothing to do with auto insurance rates away!

I think I’ve been negligent in not re-pricing and getting quotes again. I used to do it annually, but always found that Progessive was the least expensive option for us, so I stopped as we had been there a long time. But it doesn’t look like that may be the case and the longer

I have to say, that I’m not sure why Florida’s rates have increased so precipitously. It makes sense in the property and casualty market due to wind storms and coastal building, but I’m not sure I completely understand why it has happened so precipitously in auto rates above and beyond other states.

What insurance money are you referring to? If you are in Florida, the only car insurance money available to you is PIP and med pay unless you have a threshold injury.

    That's not the typical situation.

First, PIP is a negligible expense, at least on my policies....less than $50/6 months/car.

If you are in a car accident and are transported to a hospital, your PIP is exhausted within two hours...likely before you even called a lawyer. It's only $10K of coverage. When I was rear ended by a texter a few years ago, an accident that resulted in significant, permanent demonstrable neck injuries, I went to St. Joseph's Hospital North. I never even saw a doctor...vitals taken, X-rays and CT scan of my neck. Two hours later, I was sent on my way with a prescription and ultimately what turned out to be less than $100 left of my PIP coverage.

I would still like to see someone whose premium got jacked post a comparison from the old policy period to the new one's individual coverage costs.

If we see the increase is primarily due to bodily/personal injury liability rate increases, that's likely on the PI lawyers.

But still Florida has the highest average auto insurance rate of any state in the country. And its average rate is more than twice that of many other states.
