This is it. I’m done…. though probably, and embarrassingly - “only for now”. But this kinda story is is really cleaving my fan hood and interest. I’m sure I’ll see y’all when the season approaches…. but I’m gonna disengage for awhile. Rep for Miami star Wong: Better NIL deal or exit
I’m with you. This entire NIL circus has quelled my enthusiasm for the only sports that I actually enjoyed watching.
Such a quick and upsetting turn on the intent of NIL. The NCAA has dropped the ball so hard on this front.
We’re gonna see a lot of coaches retiring or heading to the NBA soon. No one wants to deal with free-for-all free agency in college and having billionaire donors acting as GMs. Jay Wright was the first of many. Wait and see.
I hope they fix this stuff asap. Its going to ruin the sports. I am fine with NIL in some form and the portal, but they must be altered to better sustain the long term viability of the games.
The problem is that there is no “they.” The “NCAA” has as much or little authority as its members give it. Based on 40 years studying Federal policy making, I can see no reason to expect Congress spending much time right now on this issue
It is pretty damn ugly. But it is probably more real than what we were used to seeing played out. The real question isn't where we are but rather what are we going to be in the future (hopefully near future). If revenue sports are merely a bidding war for unproven players (or even some who are and want MUCH better deals) then I will be right behind you. And even though it isn't quite in my routine, I have to think it has to be cold turkey. Once you give it up, you don't look back and hope. Over is over.
how was this type of contract negotiations not expected? It's only about the money now, education plays no factor in most players decisions, and they now have options to pursue the money, and/or more playing time.
All that we are witnessing is what has been going on anyway, behind the scenes for YEARS. It’s just out in the open now. And it’s as ugly as we suspected it was. ‘Amateurism ’ is ‘over’ with. It’s a bidding war now. It’s going to ‘make’ for much more time to do other things rather than watching all the ‘pro’, I mean College games.
A few thoughts: Apparently those who used to say "its only the top 1% of players that have any actual monetary value," were wrong. Are teams going to hire a college version of a GM eventually? The coaches who say they hate this (and I don't doubt their sincerity), are often the same ones who have left job after job for other options or threatened to leave unless their conditions were met by an athletic department. All that to say though, this is hurting my enjoyment of college sports as well. I suspect things worked more like this than we were all aware but certainly not this blatant and obvious. I do think this is more fair than how it used to be but I agree it takes the joy out of sports. This is now professional sports at universities.
To me, the real issue is locking down transfer rules. That will curb the NIL shuffle. Athletes want the money, cool, but you can’t have the money and freedom of transfer. Can’t have both or you get this mess.
It’s been tainted long before some of them have gotten to college. This has been going on, at least, since the “ Sneaker Shoe Wars” and the equivalent rise of “ AAU Sneaker Sponsored Teams”. When “ someone “ is getting paid, it’s natural that “others/ everyone” will want a share. Then, there’s a ton of untalented & greedy folks with their hands out, looking for some sort of compensation, from someone else’s talent or potential. Those folks can & do influence players decisions.
