No doubt the state of Florida has their share of idiots. But you have to remember that for many people weather can be quite fascinating. And there's nothing like experiencing it first hand. I have walked down to the end of my street and across the dune walkover during hurricanes just to look at the ocean here. It's an experience unlike any other. Not much different than watching wildlife in their natural habitat. Our beach cam: Live Cam Volusia County - New Smyrna Beach View - DeLand, Florida - United States
When I lived in the area (early 90's) the Octoberfest put on by the German American Social Club was so much fun! I have dear friends in Cape Coral - I hope they get through this OK....
No idea. I spent more years in Naples and folks moved to the Cape when I was in undergrad. I think the development aspect is mostly in the dredging of canals, but don't know the real history.
In Dunedin just some light wind and steady rain. We live just off the gulf but have moved inland a little to family house that has whole house generator. Hope if our house loses power later it won’t be a week again to get it fixed like Irma.
Just saw a video of downtown Naples. It’s a flowing river. Sister is hunkered down just NE of downtown. Still has power somehow.
All of those characters have left the pier. Waves are topping the pier and it looks like surge has begun. Don’t know how much more the pier can take. - David (Ian, get out of here already!) PwrMc

I’ve seen it dropping to TS by the time it gets here… winds 40-60, higher gusts. Obviously depends on track and speed.
Well, looks like the pier cam has been taken out. At least, when I tried accessing it there was no feed happening. Ian wants to do things in secret and not let the world see what’s going on! - David (sneaky, he is) PwrMc
Never seen this before. Water is sloshing about in the toilet. And I'm on the 3rd floor. Storm surge related? Bizarre.
