Windy, gusty here in S Miami. We were very lucky. 12 foot tidal surge for Englewood ...my root canal dentist retired there. Mixed thoughts.
I flew up to St Petersburg to help my girlfriend who is at my place on the bay. Good news bad news, the storm is a monster south of here but because we are on the north side of the storm the water is being sucked out of the bay. Wild looking! Lot of wind, 52 right now (supposed to gust to about 77) and more on the way, but we dodged a bullet. Send your well-wishing to those just south of us. That storm surge is historical.
I ain't no meterologist but this thing looks a bit worse than what was originally projected. Thankfully not going right up Tampa Bay but I feel for the folks from Ft Meyers and North. Looks terrible..............
Well, I’m in Naples. At the moment of this writing, I’ve still got power and my radar app indicates that the center of Ian is due west of here and out in the Gulf. I would estimate it’s likely about 35 miles out. Every hurricane is different, and this one has been an odd one in that it apparently has ferocious winds around the eye but not much extending out in the northeast quadrant which is where I’m located. The northeast quadrant is where winds and rain usually extend the farthest. Hopefully this area will escape as unscathed as possible. But the danger for Naples now is right after the storm passes this area. Due to counter-clockwise rotation, the back side of the storm will have winds pushing directly towards the Naples coastline, and that’s when storm surge usually comes in. So, hopefully there will not be flooding along the coast. That’s it for now. And pray for SW Florida! - David (nothing clever to say right now) PwrMc
Here in S. Tampa not too much, a little wind and some light rain. Did see the water being blown out of the bay along Bayshore. We are in a Zone B which got evacuated but we are staying. Well above the storm surge line. House is steel and concrete including the roof, impact windows. One thing I don't understand is we used to be in a Zone C based on FEMA maps a couple years ago but Hillsborough Co. took it upon themselves to make our area a B. Probably so they don't have to send first responders out to more areas.
Sounds all too simple.....though, "just be smart." Each one of us UF brothers and sisters shall never be alone, so if anyone needs anything, then never hesitate. In us, marches Florida...through all kinds of weather, always and forever.
Mom and older brother are in Pensacola so they should be fine. Have about a dozen family members in the Summerfield area and as far as I know they aren't evacuating.
I grew up in St. Pete and remember when Hurricane Donna came thru in 1965 and sucked the water out of Tampa Bay-a reporter for WLCY was reporting while standing in the bay.
SMDH….. there’s always got to be some idiots who have to go out and see stuff during a storm like this. And what happens to those bozos if the surge comes in? Then they’re in a life-threatening situation due to their careless decision. The 1,000 ft Naples Pier is an iconic part of the Naples area and had its beginning near the start of the 20th century. It’s been wiped out a few times by hurricanes, but always rebuilt in the same location. My family moved to Naples 3 1/2 months before hurricane Donna hit on Sept 10, 1960, so, yeah, I’ve been through a few storms here. We had just moved down to Naples back then and had enjoyed walking out on the pier a few times. Then Donna came along and wiped it out. When it was rebuilt, the buildings on the pier were designed in a Tahitian style, and that style has remained since. Anyway, Bazza….thanks for posting the link to the pier cam! - David (hope it’s still standing after all this is over) PwrMc
Got the kayaks loaded (beer and snacks) on the first coast in case I need to float out….. Everyone be safe
Sister just left Naples for Vero Beach about an hour ago - almost too late. Looks like my old neighborhood in Cape Coral might end up being submerged. Yikes
