How to Fix the Broken College Sports System

So the NFL would just start pimping FCS and D2 schools instead? I mean, they're cynical scumbags, but that would be a new level of low. That said, I'm sure guys like you have an angle to make some coin off it.

 

Just saying. If it were raised simply to 3.0 and a 1200 SAT (or comparable ACT), how many 5* are eligible? 10%? 20%?

If you don't think pimping player development off on the colleges is important to the NFL, just wait for the complaints that are definitely going to come about the lack of quality post-NIL. You heard it here first.

 

In today's environment (particularly in States that have made HS NIL payments legal), the NCAA would be back in court so fast brought by the same folks that are claiming a private organization can't set its own transfer standards. The Supreme Court NIL ruling opened up a big bucket of worms that was probably unintentional at the time.

 

Can't you just have a decent conversation without all the pot shots?

 

The SCOTUS decision was 9-0 against the NCAA. how often do you see that. This was not even a close question: you simply cannot create an operation that makes people work 50-60 hours/week for you, limits their choice of schools, choice of outside work, and make billions off them. I simply do not understand how folks can question all the justices understanding of labor law, and trust their own without reading the opinion/law?

Next, the Supreme Court did not rule that “NIL cannot be limited.” They ruled in the context of the current system that telling a student they cannot make money outside cannot be limited. However, employers put limits on employee NIL all the time. Player contracts can (and do) have limits on whom they can endorse (no weed, sex, etc.). It is very common to preclude employees from having outside employment. I am not sure how this would work in colleges.

I also agree that then NCAA has set itself up fo antitrust lawsuits and may owe significant back damages for previously illegally preventing players from getting NIL money. That lawsuit has already been filed and it is for billions. This should have been solved collectively with schools/conferences/ncaa and player representatives decades ago, but the parties just keep grabbing all the money they can and not looking to build a workable system. Why would they when the current system has the NCAA making bank, not paying players, and players getting paid. The loser is fans and the game, but this is America and money is always the proof of success (to far too many).

 

I find so much rich irony in sone of same folks who argue against regulation in business, Wall Street, environmental sectors etc arguing for regulation and socialism for college athletes. (Which btw… I think is the way to go…) but the same can be said for our corporations run amuck with CEO’s making 275 times their workers, lack of liveable wages etc

 

C'mon man, I am not alone here with my view of what you are proposing. The college students are STILL student athletes and we need to go back to that not towards more uncertainty. We do NOT need and NFL minor league.

If the school or state or NCAA is in control of their pay-to-play, then they are not simply students and college athletes. That is the definition of an employee. That would make the NCAA more like the commissioner of the NFL... where conferences are no longer needed and could easily the be dissolved by the "new" NCAA.

Why would any conference commissioner give to the NCAA that kind of power and control over college athletics in a pay to play scheme?

Once you control the money you control the athlete. Right now the NCAA is toothless and I would rather that we keep the conferences and fix what's broken instead of exacerbating this NIL portal by making the NCAA sole leader and controlling body of student athletes.

I think the conferences need to get together and create a Constitution to protect them from these power hungry entities that look to obfuscate power away from college conferences and their important role in their student athletes.

There is no need to destroy all of college athletics for some new overloard entity that the SCOTUS basically ruled impotent on college sports. Now is the time for conferences to get together and assert their collective unity and power against the NCAA or the next "idea" that comes around.

The quickest way to kill college football and all it's pageantry is to kill individual conferences. NCAA control will do just that.

 

Yeah, but those are just institutional standards that apply to all students and are academically motivated. I don't see how the USSC could overturn that. If so, then wouldn't that apply to the school at large and academic standards would be eliminated altogether? I can't imagine them opening up that can of worms.

 

I know where you stand on this (and seemingly benefit from it) and thus, on this issue, I consider you the enemy. Glad you found some new financial opportunities. Good for the rest of the agents too. I.E. the real benefactors of all this.

 

I thought you were referring to the NCAA as a whole creating higher standards. If they didn't, it wouldn't accomplish what you proposed anyway, because there will always be schools that have virtually no standards for enrolling a great athlete.

 

No they're not. They're pros who take a few classes. Some even get degrees. But they're pros now and will be for the rest of our lifetimes. It's always been an NFL minor league (the only league in the world that doesn't have one and happens to be the richest in the world). We've just removed some of the veneer.

 

Umm. How do I benefit? Im self employed working in the health and fitness industry. I have worked with college and pro players from a rehab and strength/ conditioning aspect.

My stance is , I don't have a problem with NIL or the portal. I think players should be able to choose their path. I just enjoy the game

 

Okay, so you're just a trainer. Either way, you're in the community that's been pushing this narrative for years. An actual minor league would have been the best way to do this, but you guys always love to blame the non-profit. Whatever. My bad for the tone.

 

Because the blame is easy. The NCAA and the conferences hoarded the billions while screaming amateurism.

Again, who is this NCAA fellow sitting on this pile of money, buying luxury yachts, summering in Monaco, etc. Oh, yeah, it's a non-profit made up of hundreds of institutions that plows most of that money back into the non-profit itself. The only people making real money are the coaches and the players demand the best coaches. . . and 100M training facilities with barber shops and recording studios. And, you know what? We (the big schools who can afford it) give it to them.

I'm not saying the system isn't unfair or even corrupt, but that the finger pointing is misplaced. How, again, does the NFL manage to keep itself out of this conversation. They are the FOR PROFIT league that is driving this and it's their owners, not the NCAA, who are purchasing the luxury yachts. The richest league in the world (by far) and the only one who completely foists player development off on a third-party (NBA does as well, but to a lesser degree and has a pro path for HS players).

Horded? Really? So where is this horde of cash? Where are the luxury yachts? The Lambos? The villas in St. Moritz? Who, outside of HC's at big schools is making millions? Or even over a million? Head of the NCAA? Some AD's. What about the 2/3rds of schools that scramble to break even?
