Perhaps the best argument that can be made for humanity: 400 million guns and two trillion rounds of ammo and somewhere between 20 and 25 thousand are shot dead every year.

This is misinformation. Borderline communist propaganda.

The NRA does not write gun laws, nor do university law schools. The legislature writes laws, the judiciary will hear challenges to said law’s constitutionality. The SCOTUS, on numerous occasions have upheld the 2nd amendment and have specifically referenced the militia as the pretext for individual gun ownership rights. Further, it should be clarified that the courts’ numerous references to the militia clause underscore the necessity with which the people have to arm themselves and also up to a reasonable level to stand a fighting chance against a government that turns on its citizens.

In short, the constitutionality of individual gun ownership rights have been re-affirmed numerous times by our courts over the past century. Any representation otherwise is simply a lie.

Waaaaaayyyyyy off. Go read up on the 1939 SCOTUS decision in US v. Miller. The founders actually didn’t want a standing army militia. They wanted individuals to own the guns and to be able to coalesce if the federal government turned on the people. The National Guard has nothing to do with the militia as it relates to the 2nd Amendment.

Yep, amazing how much forethought and wisdom the founders had. You could always move to Cuba where your “bill of rights” have no such insulation.

That nuance does exist with the 2nd Amendment. Otherwise gun control laws wouldn’t be a thing. Chicago would have been turned down on Day 1. But alas, there is nuance.

Why would you think I was complaining about the amendment process?

My apologies. I’m comforted to know you think we should have 2/3rds of Congress on board before we amend the Constitution. Thank you for clarifying.

    Copied from before

It would be one thing if that 6-3 majority flowed from and reflected actual popular will as expressed through elections. But all nine justices have turned over since the presidency of Bush 1. Justice Thomas is the longest-serving justice. There been eight presidential elections during that time, excluding 2020. Republicans have won the popular vote twice (1988 and 2004) during that timeframe. Even if we ignore the popular vote and just look at winning in the Electoral College, Republicans have won 4 elections, Democrats 4. But Republicans have 66% of the Court.

The Supreme Court was not intended to necessarily be a purely majoritarian expression, but neither was it meant to be this removed from majoritarian preferences.

I read your post and you still don't get it. Cute childish personal insults do NOT bolster your double standard...

Armed citizens are the best remedy for communist wannabes in congress.

Do you think the founders intended that language to protect the insanity it has wrought upon our nation?

You guys crack me up. So I can't own a gun as an individual but my family does since I view my family as a militia. Not a militaristic one, but one that comes to each other's aid. You live out in the sticks, you better be armed. No pansies living out here, throwing liberal jibes at coyotes, bears, snakes, etc, or worse, a home invader. In fact, the few liberals who do live out here are ardent 2A supporters and all own AR-15s. Why? It simply is the best all-around home defense rifle available. I own most of the Top 10 best home defense weapons, and my AR is the best of them. It's easy to use, very reliable, and extremely accurate. I own a Mossberg 500 for inside the house but I don't have many rounds in the chamber so I better be accurate. Usually, the sound of cocking a shotgun is enough to cause any home invader to run away. Home invaders are probably a better issue in the inner city than where I live, so yes, people should have guns if they need them. I would also say you need to be responsible and know everything about all of your guns, including how to use them and how to maintain them.

So once again I quote the Founding Fathers. I can find hundreds of Federalist Papers that blow holes through the anti-2A folks:
    1. “The Constitution shall never be construed… to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” – Samuel Adams
    2. “…arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside… Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them….” – Thomas Paine
    3. “To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them…”- Richard Henry Lee
    4. “The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States.” – Noah Webster
    5. “A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite; and their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories as tend to render them independent of others for essential, particularly military, supplies.” – George Washington
    6. “What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.” – Thomas Jefferson
    7. “The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” – Thomas Jefferson
    8. “I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers.” – George Mason
    9. “A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves …” – Richard Henry Lee
    10. “The people are not to be disarmed of their weapons. They are left in full possession of them.”- Zachariah Johnson

Me: During the american revolution did militia men bring their own weapons?

    Chatgpt:
So, it seems likely to me that, when the constitution was ratified, the word "militia" actually referred to a group of private gun owners.

Edit: be sure and expand the quote...The last paragraph is the best part.

Heh, one should always ask followup questions when using Chatgpt. Not everyone in the militia brought their own personally owned firearm so the last paragraph of ChatGPT's answer isn't nearly as good as I had originally thought. Nevertheless, there were many militia men using their personally owned weapons during the American Revolution so it's very unlikely that the word "militia" is being correctly interpreted by the gun control lobby.
