Rarely does Trump speak the truth, but after the pic, he was interviewed and said he picked him because "He really likes me. Maybe more than anyone likes me." or something along those lines.

I honestly think that was the extent of his vetting. Each VP candidate got a little note that said -

Do you like me, please check box -
    Yes
    Oh hell yes,
    You are my god.

    Vance checked the god box.

Perhaps also possible that Trump is trying to get billionaire Peter Thiel (who apparently bankrolled J.D.'s Senate run) back into the fold.

This seems right on. Many competing theories exist to try to explain Trump’s behavior: he’s an idiot, he’s playing 4D chess, he’s a Russian asset, he’s just trying to rile the libs, he’s a racist, etc. But I’d bet that 80%+ of his behavior could be predicted simply looking at how Trump pleases his own ego.

Did [person / entity] flatter Trump? If yes = compliment. If no = claim they are [lazy / stupid / failing / extremist / ugly / etc]. Does [behavior / words] show how great Trump is? If yes = do or say it. If no = ignore or claim no knowledge of it.

Narcissistic personality disorder explains 100% of Trump’s moves. Read about it and you can predict Trump’s every move. It’s related to ego, but the need for admiration is just what is on the surface. I had a fascinating conversation with a dude who had a PhD from Duke and 35+ years treating people with NPD. It explains Trump’s speech such as “best ever” or “worst ever” as well as narcissists view everything as all good or all bad based on how it will impact their ego. Trump’s energy comes from the narcissistic supply he gets at rallies. Also explains his victim mentality as people with NPD think a different set of rules should apply to them.

I’m more interested in why half the country doesn’t see through this shit. Narcissistic, self promoting, traits are a pre requisite to become President. Trump just takes it from high on a normal scale to a personality disorder.

JD Vance: I love my wife. Obviously she’s not a white person BUT I love her.

I guess he’s sleeping on the couch tonight.

We're going on 10 years now and some of you don't understand the most basic ways Trump operates. The reality is Vance was vetted. These comments and emails were no doubt discussed between Trump and Vance ahead of his selection as Trump's running mate. Anyone who doesn't believe that because the DNC has skipped over that inevitability deserves to be misled. If you follow Trump or know much about Trump at all, there is one type of person he lovvvves more than a person who has been MAGA 4 Life since Day One: a convert.

By selecting Vance, he is sending a message to the electorate "hey, if you didn't vote for me last time, that's okay. You can change and it's okay. My running mate did the same." And as mentioned, Trump gets more personal validation when someone who ripped him in the past joins the throngs of supporters afterwards. This isn't unique to Trump, by the way. Again, Kamala called Joe Biden a sex criminal and a segregationist on the debate stage in 2020. I would say I don't understand the double standard being applied to Vance, but I do. The same double standard that is applied to everything else...

I’m sure they vetted him, and there’s no doubt they game-played the email and prior stance. However, I read that when they were choosing the VP pick (presciently before the assassination attempt), Trump Junior wanted Vance and talked his father out of selecting Rubio because Rubio might be too well-liked by “RINO’s”, thus making it easier for them to impeach his father. With Vance, the RINOs would have no reason to impeach Trump, according to Junior’s thinking. And so it seems to me, Trump selected Vance not due to wide appeal, but because of the absence of appeal to his enemies.

edit: here’s an article on the point above.
Why Trump Jr. Is Begging His Dad to Avoid Marco Rubio as V.P. Pick
