First of all just want to say this abhorrent. Glad the guy is dead (he the reporting is accurate). Truly a sad moment in our history.

Having said that I really hope Trump, for the first time in his political career, he doesn’t inflame things further and try to paint all democrats as complicit in this. Does he throw gas on the fire and turn up the rhetoric or does he try to ratchet things down? I really, really hope it’s the latter.

Just want to get this on record before he starts tweeting.

When was the last time Trump acted responsibly and didn't throw fuel on the fire? I fear things will only get worse now.

He will do the usual. Fan the flames, whip his supporters into a frenzy, and a firehose of gasoline on the fire. The concerning part is if there is an uptick in political violence that spirals.

    For context:

Ronald Reagan's first speech after being shot was delivered on March 30, 1981, at the National Conference of the Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO, at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Here's an excerpt from his speech:

"Before we go any further, I would like to say something to all of you—I am quite aware that the mere fact that I am here speaking to you today is a miracle. But I want you to know that I know that every day is a miracle. Each time we embrace a friend, or throw a leg over a horse, or just thank God that we live in a country where we are free—that's a miracle. Each time we smile at our children, or praise a friend for some work well done, or just simply to take a walk in the evening—that's a miracle. I am now going to move that we continue with our normal order of business."

Ask for money. Exploit the dead victim. Fan the flames with escalatory rhetoric

Basically everything the opposite of what a leader should do.

I've long said that I expect Trump to be elected in 2024.

I hope that this incident makes him realize his own mortality, and that he draws from this that there really just may not be an unlimited amount of time to do all of the things he wants to do to help people.

Trump has always been one of the kindest, most generous, persons around- whether it's through charitable donations, running a university, or providing people with equitable low rent housing. He does these things because he CARES! And he's always been a champion of women's rights.

So I hope that what he takes away from this is a renewed conviction of using his life to really really help people. As he's always done.

A noble, upstanding guy like Trump won’t use an incident like this to rile up his base or attempt to make money off it. He’s not that kind of guy.

Trump already responded. He yelled “fight, fight, fight” with his fist raised.

The question is how will Americans respond?

Will we respond with disarmament and a sense of collective reckoning of what we have become?

    Likely not.

We will respond with vitriol hate and disgust with our neighbors, family, and friends.

Americans have already lost this country to the radical left and right.

We have reached a new low.

    With a W.

And I won’t be voting for him, but between this and the debate it’s over.

I would not be shocked if Trump and his master Vlad did not concoct this whole thing to further reinforce the whole carefully crafted image of Trump is "savior" and "invincible". He will definitely play into this and tout how the "evil forces" can not stop a being as "powerful" as him.

This whole thing smells like a bad script.

He will milk it for all its worth.

Hopefully it will make him time things down but I doubt it.

agreed. Very pleased with his response thus far. It’s his election to lose now. No need to burn everything down.

A leopard doesn't change his spots. Does being shot at absolve Trump for all the rhetoric and actions that dehumanized people?

I can see him taking the high road.

    or...

I can see him selling his bloody hat on ebay by sunrise. It really could go either way.

A guy on the CNN panel made an impassioned plea for a toning down of the rhetoric, by everyone. He was brilliantly on point.
