I don't know that BN's capable of saving his job. To save his job, I think he has to fix the OL. Clearly, he can't do that. Because the OL is a weakness, I don't see Mertz playing well. He took a beating last year, and, unfortunately, I think he will get knocked out of the game again. Can DJ save Napier's job? I highly doubt it. If BN loses to TAMU, I expect BN is gone. Clearly, we are weak on offense and defense, and I am not sure the answer is merely a quarterback change. I don't see how BN saves his job. Your thoughts?
I guess the $64,000 question: Can DJ thrive against SEC defenses? I think we won't know unless, at some point, he plays.
My thoughts…… meh. Kidding. If he can muster a winning season with a bowl game and still manage to recruit well and not lose a lot to the portal then I think he has a shot. I’d also require some staffing changes and the addition of an OC. Be a HC Napier, let someone else handle the offense. But it’s up to the big ballers, not me.
By hiring competent staff. As much as people complain about his coaching ability, or lack thereof, that's not really his main job. His job is to set the overall strategy for the team that he thinks will win and hire the best people to do it. Which is why it is amazing to me that he's trying to run the offense and surrounding himself with incompetence and inexperience. It's like he doesn't actually know what his job is. If he was serious about it he'd go hire the best available DC and OC that fit his vision for the team. Then he'd help them succeed and grow, much like other great coaches have which is why good coaches have so many former coordinators now leading programs.
For me it's simple: Win, and look competent doing it. I "give up" on a coach when I come to the absolute resolution that there is now way he'll win any kind of championship. Billy didn't look great his first two seasons, but there were "reasons" for that. In year 3, a lot, if not all of those "reasons" are gone. That first game against Miami showed me no improvement or growth. That's the reason tons of people changed their tune about CBN. Now that being said, I haven't come to the absolute resolution that he's not going to win yet... but given the trajectory, it won't be long... I just can't see him winning and all of the sudden looking competent in the next few games. You never know what is going to happen next though... I really don't want to go through another head coaching change, but it looks inevitable at this point.
I find it hard to believe that this once very good program would accept a loosing season for three years in a row with the same coach.
This. Winning cures everything. Everyone stops questioning his leadership style, his playcalling, his ability to hold classes together, his odd decisions with having a “Gamechange!” coordinator, and everything else. He becomes a genius in all of these things.
Here's one thing Billy could do to impress me and save his job: merge all these threads about his job. Maybe I should start a thread about it.
Amazing right? Win a very important home opener against a rival with a coach in his 3rd year with your team you praised all offseason or at least look improved and you control your own destiny. Crazy concept
There’s an awful lot riding on this weekend’s game. If there was ever a “must win game” this may be it Edit: and if UF wins, Mississippi State becomes the next “must win game”
I don't think I want him to hire a coordinator that fits his vision for the team. I think he needs to change his vision and come up with an offense that has more than a half a dozen plays and more than 3 WR routes. Boosting talent on the OL and DL would do wonders too but not sure if that's possible now that the season started.
I tend to agree but this one is calling for productive responses which is different than the others so it's unique enough. We've already merged quite a few threads. Most are unhappy and tend to post the same things . . . same as when they're happy.
