China is such a bad place to live that large numbers of Chinese are migrating to Mexico to work in restaurants because the economic opportunities are much better and they have freedom and independence in Mexico that they couldn't imagine in China. Some are leaving good-paying tech jobs in China, believe it or not. This is not going to help China's shrinking population problem, or their shrinking economic fortunes. This is why Chinese are sneaking across the border into the U.S. in large numbers.

The 30-year-old woman from Chengdu, the Sichuan provincial capital, hopes one day to start an online business importing furniture from her home country.

“I want more,” Li said. “I want to be a strong woman. I want independence.”

Li is among a new wave of Chinese migrants who are leaving their country in search of opportunities, more freedom or better financial prospects at a time when China’s economy has slowed, youth unemployment rates remain high and its relations with the U.S. and its allies have soured.

100 percent agree. My grandfather was in Okinawa and saw things he would not talk about. Hi next assignment was to gather info in Hiroshima. He said they still wore chemical suits 3 months later and really wanted us to know that. They are just evil. That was 15-20 KT's. Not Megatons. I hope one is never used again.

Really. I’ve known submariners. They’re competent people. But there is little objective basis for the claim that our subs are better than their subs and Russia, in particular, has more deployable nukes than we have and China is catching up at a dizzying pace.

It has been my consistent position that Russia and China have closed or eliminated the military gap and for that reason our government should aim to defuse tensions and learn to get along in the world.

Also, it is extremely doubtful that we could engage in a first strike strategy without being completely destroyed ourselves.

I think he prefers you to use his Russian code name, which we believe is "Lee Harvey". He knows real live submariners, and therefore he can tell just by looking into their eyes (and possibly their ears and noses) just how good their submarines are compared to submarines from other countries. It's a gift. He can also bypass all of the literature available, and just rely on a Twitterer known as "Moon of Alabama" for his information, and possibly for his moonshine.

The agency has published a series of such posts since launching its WeChat account last August, urging the public to be alert to all manner of foreign threats as Chinese leader Xi Jinping prioritizes the strengthening of national security.

China has been trading accusations of espionage with the United States and its allies amid tense relations between the world’s two largest economies. China's "Hawaii" took a Cat. 4 typhoon this week. It's the world's second strongest storm so far this year.

One of this year’s most powerful storms slammed into the Chinese holiday island of Hainan on Friday, the strongest typhoon to make landfall there in 10 years.

Packing maximum sustained wind speeds of 230 kilometers per hour (140 miles per hour), Typhoon Yagi was the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane – the world’s second most powerful tropical cyclone of 2024 so far, only eclipsed by the Atlantic hurricane Beryl which was a Category 5.

It later made landfall a second time on the southwestern end of Guangdong province and is expected to continue skirting China’s coastline before moving into northeastern Vietnam later Saturday.

More than a million people were evacuated to safer territory in Hainan and Guangdong while early reports from Chinese state media on Saturday morning reported many trees down and some local flooding. Some 830,000 households were left without electricity initially in the storm, although power has already been restored to 260,000 homes.

China's "Wolf Warrior" Minister has been demoted to publishing house clerk. This may be a good sign for U.S. - China relations.

Somebody has to take the blame for China's failing economy and poor position in world affairs, and it isn't going to be Chairman Xi.

China's former foreign minister Qin Gang is working in a low-level publishing job after falling foul of China's leader Xi Jinping, The Washington Post reported.

Two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the publication that Qin was now listed as an employee at World Affairs Press, a publishing company associated with China's foreign ministry.

The officials reportedly told the publication that the demotion took place in spring. One characterized it as a "fall from grace" but also said, "he's off the hook."

"He's not going to jail, but his career is over," one source told the Post.

One of the officials told the outlet that the demotion is likely intended as a warning to others.

China’s government has positioned itself to embed “Communist Party spies” at Microsoft and other US companies that do business in the country — and further expose them to theft of trade secrets, employee poaching and even scary intimidation tactics, The Post has learned.

A new version of Beijing’s “company law” that took effect July 1 — a clampdown that has seen scant coverage in the Western press, according to experts — requires multinational firms with more than 300 workers in the country to appoint an “employee representative” to their China affiliate’s board of directors.

Sources tell The Post that the “representatives” are almost certain to be in regular contact with Chinese authorities — if not outright members of the Chinese Communist Party. That, in turn, would give Beijing a direct line into the sensitive internal workings of American firms.

The new rules, which can alternatively require that companies adopt a local supervisory board for workers, could also give the CCP frightening tools to exert control over US companies’ employees, according to US officials.

U.S. Navy Seal Team 6 is preparing to defend Taiwan from Chinese invasion. This sounds kinda serious. I'm not sure China is prepared to deal with Seal Team 5, much less Seal Team 6. They probably thought they would get Boy Scout Otter Team 2 or something.

SEAL Team 6, an elite military special missions unit, has spent more than a year planning and training for a potential Chinese invasion of the island at its Dam Neck base in Virginia Beach, per the FT.

The unit's contingency plans — in keeping with most of its missions — are highly classified. People familiar with its planning did not provide details to the FT about what specific missions it is preparing for.

While SEAL Team 6's official purpose is to test, evaluate, and develop technology and tactics for all naval special warfare forces, it is "unofficially" involved in sensitive missions around the world.

China responds by saying that it will crush America's pawns on the chess board of life. I'm not sure they understand this modern warfare thing. But it is very bold talk from a country that has not won a war involving naval assets in over 400 years.

On Thursday, a senior Beijing military official said on the sidelines of a defence forum: “If the United States moves its pawns behind the scenes, if it pushes countries to the front line, or if the United States itself ends up on the front line, then we in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army... will never have any patience.

“We in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army will resolutely crush any foreign hostile encroachment on China’s territorial, sovereign and maritime rights and interests with firm determination, staunch will, strong capability and effective means.”

By the end of this year, China will have more pets than toddlers. Many younger people are giving up on the idea of having kids, and quite a few think that a pet is a good substitute for a family. It is much cheaper, and does not require a marriage. China's natural population growth rate (number of births minus number of deaths per thousand people) is now -1.48, down from +7.5 in 2012. This indicates both an aging population and a lack of births. Twenty years ago, the idea of owning a pet was considered a "bourgeois concept" for countries corrupted by wealth.

Goldman found pet food to be one of the fastest growing consumer sectors in China, which is expanding despite otherwise anemic spending. Sales grew an average of 16% each year between 2017 and 2023, creating a $7 billion industry. The industry’s value is expected to surge to $12 billion in 2030, the report added. At its most optimistic, pet food could become a $15 billion industry in China in six years.

It’s a far cry from just two decades ago, when pet ownership was still considered a bourgeois concept and people kept mixed breeds as guard dogs.

And even now, pet ownership remains comparatively low, according to Goldman Sachs. Last year, the percentage of dog-keeping households in Chinese cities stood at 5.6%, significantly lower than its neighbors and giving it room to grow, it said. Japan reached 17.5% in 2009, according to the report.

Its predictions for babies were less rosy. The report projected the number of new births in China to contract at an average annual rate of 4.2% between 2022 and 2030 because of a decline of women in the 20 to 35 age group, as well as young people’s reluctance to have children.
