What is your honest assessment of the ranking of the current SEC coaches? I had a hard time putting Mike White in the top 10 over some of the new hires, but he might be deserving, just couldn't do it. 1-John Calipari-Kentucky Wildcats 2-Bruce Pearl-Auburn Tigers 3-Eric Musselman-Arkansas Razorbacks 4-Buzz Williams-Texas A&M Aggies 5-Nate Oats-Alabama Crimson Tide 6-Rick Barnes-Tennessee Volunteers 7-Matt McMahon-LSU Tigers 8-Todd Golden-Florida Gators 9-Chris Jans-Mississippi State Bulldogs 10-Lamont Paris-South Carolina Gamecocks 11-Mike White-Georgia Bulldogs 12-Kermit Davis-Ole Miss Rebels 13-Jerry Stackhouse-Vanderbilt Commodores 14-vacant-Missouri Tigers
Tough call for sure. Given the SEC's ABYSMAL showing in the NCAA's I'm not so sure about those rankings.
I guess it depends if the ranking is just coaching acumen, or the over responsibilities of running a program…. For example, I think Kermit is a good bench coach but just can’t get players. Conversely, Mike has been more successful than a few coaches you list above, but may be an inferior tactician. i think you have Oates too high from either standard.
I have to go with the obvious: who has won anything of notoriety in the past 2-3 years? Barnes seems to have things on auto-pilot the best and yet his record in the post-season speaks volumes. Pearl is a "love to love, love to hate" coach. And HIS record doesn't rank right up there either. Until further notice, Cal is still the king of doing less with more. And so I would say I would rank them all tied for first...and 14th. Okay, maybe 12th.
I think that Stackhouse is a good coach. I would put White at 13, just ahead of Davis and just below vacant.
Mine is similar, but I’d put it in tiers Tier 1: Proven elite 1. Cal Tier 2: Proven very good, can win a title. Any school would be happy with this tier in theory (excluding personal standards and age). 2. Pearl 3. Musselman 4. Barnes 5. Williams Tier 3: Young and proving their promise. Not quite ready for the step up but they’ve shown that they aren’t a Mike White level dud. One of these guys will eventually move to Tier 2 at minimum, maybe both. 6. Oats 7. Jans Tier 4: Young, unproven and high upside. I ranked them in order of how they were preferred by teams. The reality is they all have elite upside, they may settle into Tier 2, or they may flop. I prefer these guys over the lower tiers due to upside. 8. Golden 9. McMahon 10. Paris Tier 5: Know what you get and are okay with it. These guys are what they are and their teams are cool with it. Upside is limited (even if they switched teams). You can make a case for Davis in Tier 3. He just doesn’t have the upside due to age 11. Davis 12. Stackhouse Tier 6: They should get a young promising guy so vacant isn’t a bad spot 13. Vacant Tier 7: He’s a dud. Maybe you can say he’s similar to the Tier 5 guys but the different will be expectations. He will surely disappoint. No upside at all. UGA has to be happy if he turns UGA into Ole Miss and Vandy with those expectations and results. I think they want to be better 14. White
I know folks have multiple issues with Pearl, but I think he’s the best overall coach of the bunch. He created program buzz at both TN and AUB. He seems to know how to spot , recruit and develop the players for his system. While I don’t think he could do it at Florida, he generates fan support & interest in his program. His teams play hard, defend and rebound consistently. Unfortunately , his teams seem to play their best ball early, and are inconsistent at tournament time. Like a lot of coaches now, when his teams fall in love with the three, he just lets them keep firing. I like the Arky Coach for a lot of the same reasons. Calamari is one of the best recruiters in CBB. He knows talent when he sees it, and sells his approach to CBB to many. He will give you a punchers chance at a title almost every year, but needs luck in seeding to advance past the sweet sixteen. Buzz is a good bench coach and will get the best out of what he has. Barnes is the same guy at TN that he was at Tx ( he must love orange). Any Coach that can’t go deep in the tournament with Kevin Durant…you can’t trust. The rest….too early to tell. Good OP, given the coaching transition right now.
I think that Pearl runs a crappy offense that is similar to what we ran here the past several seasons. That’s why teams with great defenses can beat Auburn. Otherwise, Pearl is a tremendous coach.
I agree to a point, his teams can have really bad offensive nights. I missed most of the game in their loss to Miami last weekend. By the time I saw it, it was late and they were out of it. In listening to the game announcers, they had a bad night, and their NBA forward didn’t play well.
Agree. After seeing how good Scottie Pippen jr has been, stackhouse has been moved to the cellar. What a waste of a talented player 1-John Calipari-Kentucky Wildcats 2-Bruce Pearl-Auburn Tigers 3-Eric Musselman-Arkansas Razorbacks 4-Buzz Williams-Texas A&M Aggies 5-Nate Oats-Alabama Crimson Tide 6-Rick Barnes-Tennessee Volunteers 7-Matt McMahon-LSU Tigers 8-Todd Golden-Florida Gators 9-Chris Jans-Mississippi State Bulldogs 10-Lamont Paris-South Carolina Gamecocks 11-Kermit Davis-Ole Miss Rebels 12-Gates-Missouri Tigers 13-Mike White-Georgia Bulldogs 14-Jerry Stackhouse-Vanderbilt Commodores
White has taken teams to the Dance 5 times and he is ranked 13 in your poll. ? While the others have not been there ever ? Pretty valid ! Along with the rest of these polls that are posted here! Again the Gator Basketball Fan shows intelligent thinking.
Lurker, tracking that. That’s a part of his “ multiple issues”. I don’t normally put much weight in when the NCAA imposes restrictions on a Coach or program. It’s a lack of credibility and lack of due process problem for me. Look how long it took them to get around to Will Wade. They let Bill Self off the hook, so when they finally do attempt to penalize a Coach, I just don’t trust the motives. I forgot who posted it here, but the joke about , “ XXX Blue Blood program was caught committing a violation, boy, Cleveland State is gonna get it” , while funny, carries some truth to it. Our own experience here with the NCAA further demonstrates, to me, why I don’t trust or much care about what they say. As a response to the OP, I just focused on the basketball coaching talent of each coach. On that alone, I think Pearl has a good coaching skill set. You can not like him, I might not like him, but that’s not the basis of how I responded to the post.
It was a Jerry Tarkanian quote. "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky they gave Cleveland State two more years of probation."
great read on the topic: Jerry Tarkanian always liked a good fight, as NCAA learned the hard way " Tarkanian’s rolling mantra was that the NCAA had a double-standard for enforcement, that it picked on smaller schools but protected the sugar-daddy power programs. This produced variations of his most famous quote: “The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky they gave Cleveland State two more years of probation.” Depending on his audience, he would often sub in UCLA and say the NCAA was going to “get so upset at UCLA, they’ll put Northridge on two years probation.” Tarkanian would drive to your house to talk about UCLA basketball in the glory years under John Wooden. He admired Wooden but thought the NCAA had turned a blind eye to favors provided by Bruins booster Sam Gilbert."
He had a recruit at a BBQ at his house & turned a minor infraction into being fired by lying about it. He failed to adequately monitor an assistant who cheated but Pearl said he followed NCAA guidelines. With what goes on in college basketball that doesn't seem like a lot, were there more instances?
