The only justification for tazing a band leader is if the band is playing "Rocky Top."

If I'm not mistaken, you have the ability to start threads. There is nothing controversial about the retired police officer being mowed down...it is UNIVERSALLY condemned by all. Start a a thread, everyone will agree.

The OP's story is controversial. You have a police officer tazing a black band director for playing too long? We will have some of our resident right wing fringies defending it. Hell, you already have 2 of them doing their drive by ratings.

That's dumb. Every high school game I've been to has had the band playing after the game. Police can "ask" for whatever they want, but unless you are breaking a law or they have reason to believe you are breaking a law, you don't have to comply. The band director has already lawyered up and my guess is that he gets a settlement.

Maybe UPD got authorization back in 2003 to taser the next Vol QB who leads their band in Rocky Top in our stadium. Might be helping keep the streak going.

Your post is dumb and I'm sure he lawyered up already. I hope the dumb ass loses but unfortunately, you're right about settling way too many attorneys are ruining our great country.
Serious question, why do you think it's ok not to listen to police officers?

He was doing his job and not breaking any laws. Police need to learn that citizens in the United States have rights and they can't tase people for exercising their rights. Well, I guess they can, but it's going to come with a payday.

Police dont have that right. If they do then theoretically they can just order the game to end too because they want to go home and eat.

Cops enforce written law. Period. Full stop. There was no law to be enforced here.

Cop should be fired. Department should cover any and all expenses.

Lol, doing his job. If you list watch the video the police were clearly trying to clear the stands and the home team band stopped playing after the request from the officers. The opposing team band director ordered his band to continue to play and ignore the cops, at that point they attempted to arrest him for disorderly conduct and altercation between the police, school personal and the band director after that they used the taser to subdue this idiot. Watching the video, I imagine a lot more was happening, and the police were trying to keep it from getting out of hand. I bet this dumb ass won't win and he shouldn't, what a horrible example to show the students don't listen to the police.

When they are asking you to do something outside of their scope?

I mean if a cop in Tallahassee tells you to pull over and take the Gator plate off of your car are you required to comply?

Cops cant tell you to do whatever they want based on personal desire.

I'm completely shocked that we have supposedly intelligent people on this site falsely claiming these police officers just wanted to go home and eat. It's very obvious they were trying to prevent the crowd from getting out of hand. Just a little common-sense people, good lord you guys need some help

Alabama band director Johnny Mims tased for refusing to stop playing after HS football game (nypost.com)

Police were trying to clear out the Jackson-Olin High School stadium after the Minors had walloped the Mustangs by a score of 27-0 when they noticed both school bands were still playing, the Birmingham Police Department said.
The home team gladly left after cops asked them to stop playing, but Mims allegedly ordered his students to continue jamming.
“During the officers’ interaction with Minor’s band director, the decision was made to place him in custody,” the department said.

Mims allegedly fought against the arresting cops, refused to put his hands behind his back and reportedly pushed one of the arresting cops.

“The arresting officer then subdued the band director with a Taser which ended the physical confrontation,” police said in a statement.

The guy said, "we are fixing to leave, this is our last song" ... it was stupid for the cops to escalate, and I don't think they have any legal basis force his band to stop playing. Like I said, they can "ask" ... but you don't have to comply with requests.

I can see you are worried about the students learning a lesson, hopefully the police learn one, too.

These police-ass kissers have shown time and time again they have no problem with their beloved police treating people like crap, so naturally they’d be fine with this story

Wow, Don MacLean almost couldn't have sung it any better. "The players tried to leave the field, the marching band refused to yield." (slightly different I know)

After reading three different versions of this article, I think the officer was in the right here and followed proper process. The reason they were in the process of clearing students out of the stadium is there are four HS in the area and there had been a history of fighting afterward so some were limiting attendance so there was a safety concern (comments from one of the locals in one of the articles). The officers engaged with both band directors to get them to stop their bands to facilitate that. One complied, the other did not. The escalation appears to be on Mims here, not the officer.
