Help me understand how teams run up the middle with this much success

I have no idea but it needs to stop. I call ot Grantham itis

 

Our DT's aren't as good as advertised. The DE's over pursue and often allow gaping holes between them and the tackles. Linebackers and safeties don't fill the right gaps and are often out of position. In short, our defensive front 7 is terrible and has been in all 5 games.

 

At least hopefully those problems can be solved with good coaching. Lack of physical talent would be harder to overcome.

 

Neither are 1st round picks.
Dexter is not aggressive enough.

Watson is too big for the speed of today's NFL. Avg weight of a DT today is 310-330.

 

Doesn't stand to reason that our front seven is terrible. OTOH, our best LB has been on roster for 6 seasons(?). But what stands out is that our staff has seen this for weeks and it apparently is still happening. How long should it take? Vs Tennessee, our DEs and OLBs seemed to be trapped in the OL/DL pile most plays which allowed their QB to run for critical long gains. Seemed very unprofessional.

Inside zone is designed to create two lanes a LB has to cover. With a LB crew that is not strong, whichever way he goes the RB goes the other. You see this a LOT on Sunday.

It has little if anything to do with the DEs.

 

I think it says more about our linebackers than it does the DL. Burney has some good moments, but he's not the caliber of linebacker that would be playing if there were other options. Tight ends eat him alive, and he's not that strong in run support. People are still enamored with Cox, but I don't see it. He's out of position far too often, and good tackles can make him that way too easily.

 

Our linebackers are tweeners and have not been well coached in the past.

Miller has instincts and leadership. He just doesn’t have the size and strength necessary to be an elite SEC MLB.

Burney has athleticism but gets worked in the passing game.

James and Williams are adjusting to the college game and will be good with time.

Wingo and Borders need to start living up to their recruiting rankings.

 

Big butts clog it up and linebackers clean it up.

Now lets do lack of qb pressure

 

Watson is VERY slow and Dexter is not that good. Our linebackers are not very good either. Recruiting failures.

 

Saw Diwun Black get in there a look good on a couple plays. Maybe still dinged up though.

 

Our defense wasn't too bad against Kentucky

 

If I was an nfl team, no way would I pick him at 16…he hasn’t shown he can dominate in college yet.

 

You mean our front five, four down linemen, one LB. The rest of the defense is in a zone letting passes get connected because they are so far back, runners getting by our over matched line, due to numbers, get first downs and into the red zone. We need a different scheme that puts more bodies up close on the line like Kentucky and Tennessee play, or about any decent defense. We get aggressive this way the opposing team is under duress. Right now three and four men at the line of scrimmage is not enough bodies. Put three lb’s up close also. This would stop any running game and help get pressure and sacks on the opposing team’s passing game. I guess Toney has never envisioned the speed of SEC teams. Changes in scheme is what is needed. Recruiting will take a couple of years. So, do you just want to give up for the next couple of years, that is a copout for fans and the program.
Here comes Missouri, they will exploit this scheme if we continue on this path. Our offense is getting better and I love Kitna got a chance, moved the chains and got points. We now have a good backup and Miller will be back late in the season. Our only hope is to score early and be consistent getting points, just not moving chains. Mullen let the defense continue being an embarrassment to SEC football. Well, at this moment, we are playing scared money defense, we have been in this loop too long. It’s up to a head coach to demand changes!

 

It's worse without Vernell linebacking.

 

We need 4 Dexters on the D-line to solve that... with a true 4-3 alignment. Or at least a 4 true D-lineman front with hybrid backfield.
