I agree here. But what I don’t know is the steps the journalist took when he received the info. We do know, however, that the journalist did not release the texts to the public… until (a) Trump went on record attacking The Atlantic’s integrity and professionalism, and (b) the whole Administration double-downed that the information was NOT sensitive or confidential, and (c) the Administration tried to paint the journalist as a liar or embellisher. I can tell you that if it were me, and I were in the shoes of the journalist, I would have released the text, as well, under those conditions.

Except that what was first published was only the fact that sensitive information concerning the attack was sent via group text, which included the journalist. There was no compromising security data that was published—just the fact that it was negligently leaked. The actual texts weren’t published until the entire Administration elected to tell the public the information was harmless perfidy (or perhaps harmless minutiae)

I was thinking more of "Pete - Need you to check your email. Had a change that requires your approval." or "Marco - We need you to get in a SCIF for a TS VTC"

That, to me (and I’m no expert on these matters) would have been an acceptable use of signal. People are focusing on adding a journalist which is clearly a bone-headed mistake, but Pete Hegseth sharing high side information on the system wasn’t. It was done with intention (and perhaps Waltz set up the signal group with that intention making him just as bad on the issue).

When I was in Europe last summer on orders, we had a Signal group chat for officers in my section. It was mainly used the same way that @uftaipan mentioned. It was a lot of "XO - You are needed in the JOC by the DCG ASAP." The difference is that none of the people in the group chat had a dedicated team tasked with providing them 24/7 comm support.

Some good news. Bipartisan letter asking for a DoD IG investigation on this.

I was listening to a podcast with foreign policy expert that used to work in the Whitehouse and he said it was astounding to him that they would share info this way. He gave an example that once he was on vacation he had to drive an hour and a half to an FBI field office for a secured room/line to take part in one of these principal committees. He said he didn’t think twice about it as it was simply what was required.

Too woke dude. Plus, Elon says Signal is "awesome" and "way better than anything the government has".

I'm going to correct my position from yesterday. I agree, it isn't about avoiding FOIA requests. That's clearly a rung of thinking these types would never get to. Although I still maintain that was most if not all of Hillary's motivation. I was just attributing a level of intelligence to these guys that they clearly don't deserve.

“We screwed up, regrettably. Thankfully, no harm. But we have learned from this and have procedures in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

That would be the end of it (and bluntly, from what @g8orbill posted earlier from Newsmax, I thought that’s what Trump did). But nope … the incessant backtracking and doublespeak won the day and the inanity becomes the talking point of the day.

Loose lips sink ships. Lot of truth to that. Most of these folks should have known better. But Bro! Lol. Folks have said it’s like the frat bros are in charge. Sadly this rings true. Not an adult in the room to say no.
You see similar behavior across all kinds of com systems. People start treating them like Facebook, until it blows up in their face.
Leadership requires discipline and these folks are clueless.
Anyone who thinks they have secure coms on their personal device, llol.
