“When we were going up against them, they were an independent school so, I hate to say it, but nobody was looking over their shoulder about the rules and all this, that and the other,” Spurrier said of recruiting against the Seminoles. Gotta love him. https://theathletic.com/5271114/2024/02/14/college-football-recruiting-misses-heartbreak
He wasn't though. He transferred to Marshall for his final year and if I’m not mistaken won a NC with them at the FCS kevel
I should’ve phrased it as “best UF career backup.” I remember him going to Marshall. Played with Moss and went undefeated.
Hmmm ... he started coaching at UF in 1990 and FSU joined the ACC in 1991, so it doesn't seem that accurate.
Combine that with the media's affection for Saint Bobby and FSU was IMMUNE. Neon Dion stated publicly "I didn't even go to class my senior year". Who knows what the bags were like.
There were so many things that happened during the SOS era that made football very fun. I really hope that isn't gone forever.
The perception of Spurrier was also totally different than today, he was viewed as an arrogant whiner. Bobby was the last of the iconic coaches with a personality who could get away with anything because of that (Bryant, Switzer, Osborne, Dooley, etc).
You are correct about SOS back then..perception was SOS was arrogant and a whiner while at UF , while Bowden a saint...once SOS left UF and was at usce...the press, etc perception changed about SOS..he was to them wonderful and entertaining and they loved his comments.. I loved him then and still do now..my favorite Gator player and coach..
Good to see HBC back in Columbia today with Jerri for WBB. Saw a video of him earlier walking into the arena and he seems to really struggle getting around.
Obviously, Spurrier will always bleed the orange and blue and UF will always be number 1. But what I really admire is his support for Duke and SC. He still gives money and time to those schools and wants them to be successful. Jerri has a degree from SC and the indoor FB facilities are named after the Spurriers. To me you can make the argument, he’s the greatest to coach the game. Saban is great, but he did it at traditionally rich Bama.
