Hard fought game between 2 teams that believed it was their destiny. So glad our destiny won out in the end!
They are a bit like those UVA teams that just suffocate you. Problem with even those UVA teams is they didnt often score enough. But I agree 100%. They seem like a great group of kids and Sampson is a heck of a coach. (Albeit a little bit of a dirty one in the past).
Saw some article where some unknown commentator was hating on Todd Golden for supposedly not giving props to Houston. Saw another with unidentified Houston fans whining about a no-call on us for goal tending by Micah. I know CTG praised Houston and their coach at some point The goal tending thing is just loser talk.
It was more than that. He covered up stuff from the NCAA and his own compliance dept. He made over 600 such calls and did it at IU after getting in trouble at OU. Smoke=Fire and all that. Glad we beat him and Pearl. Those are the type of dudes that sent Billy to the pro's. He wouldnt stopp to their level.
Well, the refs also missed a clear foul on WCJr. when he was shooting a 3 pointer. So that equates to 1 more point for us as he's money from the line.
Another poorly officiated game. Par for the course. Called the two halves completely different. They’re gonna miss some calls. All you can really hope for is that they call the game the same for both teams from beginning to end. They fail to do this over and over and over again. Sure happy that we won. I’ll never understand the guys that seem to pull for the refs as much or more than they pull for the gators. These guys have no issue pointing out every flaw they can find in a Gator’s team or coach, but act like the refs are infallible.
True, but Im sure Houston would like to have many of their shots back as well. But the nice part about the championship game is that it doesn’t matter how you do it.
Sampson was pretty harsh on the interviewer during the press conference who asked about the assists. Didn’t know who else caught that.
It was his second set of violations of the same rule - improper phone calls. Did it at Oklahoma. In the grand scheme of NCAA violations however, it is pretty minor. No evidence of accusations of buying players.
I love The Athletic so I immediately scoured all their coverage this morning. I was disappointed in the narratives. Lots more focus on Samson coming up short and all that he's done, while not mentioning even once the show-clause. But when discussing Golden, two articles brought up the investigation (and one added in Taurean.) I also saw some discussion in videos (most directly, Jay Williams) about how radically different the halves were officiated. The clear implication was that it disadvantaged Houston. But geez, we put them in the bonus about six milliseconds into the second half and got two technicals.
There are some things you can nitpick about the officiating, but all in all those things mostly evened out. We picked up six fouls in about two and a half minutes to start the second half...and then Houston seemingly picked up eight in about the same length of time and we ended up in the bonus before they did. Handlogten probably got away with a goaltending, but Houston got away with a foul on the Clayton three. I rolled my eyes pretty hard at our first technical (it's the championship game and you're throwing out Ts because a couple assistant coaches jumped up and threw their hands in the air in response to a controversial call?), but Houston only made one of those two free throws. It all falls within the range of what you would expect in a given game. No one has much cause to complain.
I know there is quite a bit of dialog about the refs' "skill" in the Auburn game and I won't dispute any of it. But to me, in both games, while the flavor of reffing may have been better suited for our opponents in the first half (and usually plenty in the second), when it got down to crunch time - around the 30-minute mark - the refs sort of helped us because we want to play our way and the other teams were already used to getting their way. Let's call it close to even in whose style works and a slight benefit for us by getting ours last.
Not when the NCAA arbitrarily decides they want to make an example. Sampson didn’t do anything our very own Billy D didn’t do, Sampson just got caught. He’s a good dude.
