Folks this defense is for real, and when you have a great defense with a great running game and a quarterback who doesn't make mistakes, that's a lethal combination. We absolutely must get special teams figured out, but we look really good! I don't think 9-3 is out of the question. Did you all see FSU and Arkansas yesterday? If we can win at Kentucky, I think this is going to be a damn good season.
I said 8-4 before the season started, that’s what I’m still leaning towards. Great defense will give you a chance to win every week.
What I thought was going to be a loss is now a win, so we've gone from 6-6 to 7-5. If anything I'm more confident about the ones I already had in the W column. The L column remains a set of very tough games. So I'm not going to let my enthusiasm get the better of me. At least not just yet. Pretty easy to temper your enthusiasm when a game against Kentucky is still seen as a hurdle to overcome.
I’m with you on that. I am as pleased as can be that we won a game we should have lost. The real challenge for this season is going to be to win all of the games that we should win, namely Kentucky, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and South Carolina. If CBN can get this team up for those games and avoid letdowns, then he will make a believer of me, regardless of what happens with LSU, Georgia, and FSU.
I’d say at least by one game because I hadn’t watched UT play before last night and didn’t realize how overrated they were. If anything I’m cautiously optimistic. The defense definitely HAS improved over anything we’ve seen in orange and blue over the last few years but that was an awfully low or perhaps nonexistent bar. It is hard to say how good they are because so far they’ve played against Utah’s backups, a high school team and a bad team with an awful QB living off last year’s hype. That said, is there any team in the remainder of our schedule who has a fearsome offense that is hitting on all cylinders? I can’t think of anyone in the SEC who looks unstoppable. Perhaps Daniels at LSU is the best QB Florida will see this year and FSU proved they are beatable. FSU also proved yesterday that FSU is beatable. It’s all chaos right now.
Yesterday gave me the feeling that the tougher matchups are more winnable than a month ago, but still sticking with 8-4. CFB in general feels less predictable this year than it ever has. No one seems dominant. And the playoff teams, which you could almost pencil in at least 3 of them any other year at this time, is anyone’s guess at this point. No one is playing like they want it. The Pac12 has 8 ranked teams and is more relevant this year than they have been this century. And the SEC has had embarrassing showings in OOC games. It’s been a strange year. Very 2007-ish.
No. I watched the game some more this morning knowing what would happen and I can’t say I saw that impressive a Gators team. The OL at times was in a groove but on most plays at least one player blew a block. The passing game doesn’t exist beyond 10 yards. The DL is pretty feisty but overall tackling is not great. UT had receivers open downfield. We got away with a fair amount of soft penalties. UT is a pretty good team and has a much better offensive scheme but they played horribly undisciplined. (None of this is to say I’m not happy as can be to win.)
We aren’t world beaters by any means so beating Kentucky will be a challenge . One game at a time and we have a shot every weekend. This team is progressing.
I didn’t plan on looking at this year with wins and losses. We are in rebuild mode, and I’m looking at how we improve each week. The play last night was way better than I expected.
Tenn is a decent team and they played too. They had their successes just as we did. It seems to me, we were the better team last night. That wasn’t USF last night on the field with us.
The margin for error on this team is still so small on offense. You saw it in the 2nd half yesterday. With just a cut on Mertz thumb the offense was effectively neutered. Not to mention if anything happens to 1, 2, or especially 7. the defense is good enough to win some games but Florida is going to be forced to pass to beat teams. When the year started I thought 6-6/7-5 and I’m still right there. Too many toss up games. And looking at this offense 7 wins really almost sounds like a realistic best case scenario. And that’s not being negative. The schedule is tough. Kentucky on the road won’t be easy. South Carolina has always been scrappy on the road. Missouri just beat a top 25 team at home and this team probably has very limited chance against lsu, fsu, and uga. They could lose all of those and it wouldn’t be shocking especially with injuries of any kind on offense.
I feel the same way. I felt going into the season that we would lose two of the first six games, and two of the remainder. That looks achievable to me. I see Kentucky as a big game, bigger than UT.
That was an awesome and much needed win! But I said before the game that UT is the most overrated ranked team - they were a disaster last night (in addition to us playing well!). I think UT ends the season unranked, so I’m not sure this changes my projections. UGA, lsu and fsu should be projected as losses. I don’t see us upsetting any of those. i still think UK/USC/mizz/arky are toss-ups at this point. We can go 4-0, but if we play like we did vs Utah…ooof, don’t even want to think about that. I’m just going to enjoy this W as fan and see what happens. Ps - I love Mertz.
Nope. There will still be mistakes made as these kids grow-up right in front of us . . . so unforced errors at times but hopefully not too many and not at critical times. . . and also increasingly greater team cohesion.
