I definitely prefer the darker blue with what is called: "Competition Orange."
The blue that we had from the Spurrier days was just the right color of blue. (Royal Blue).
Not the darker, "Auburn Navy Blue" but a true, "Royal Blue."
The darker blue gives both the orange and white a better look of contrast... it pops more.

I remember being confused by this during Zook/Meyer, thinking our blue suddenly went a lighter hue.

However, in looking at the history of how we got our colors (a local merchant coming back from Virginia, basically used theie O&B color scheme--hence, it originated as navy blue and orange, then somewhen somehow morphed into a lighter shade to royal blue, then to a light hue still....), I've come to the conclusion that most anything shade between navy and sky blue, works.

And the orange, pretty much bt Tennessee/ol bucs Creamsicle (eg--when your actual Gator orange fades with age) and a deeper, darker orange (i used to call "power orange" for lack of a proper term) works.

That said, my preference is royal blue and a slightly darker (power orange) orange--but not too dark. Has to be noticeably distinct from red, so as not to be confused with nutlickers.

Fwiw, here's an interesting sampling through the years:
