Ackman has been spewing racist crap all over the place. If you want to talk about somebody who made this about race, Ackman is one of the central figures.

maybe so. Being a merit based libertarian, I don’t know how that works. He can spend a lifetime being an ardent leftist. Attend Harvard , have absolutely nothing in his past, very public life ever even hint at racism. Then he posts a fairly scathing rebuke of Claudine and poof he’s now a racist? Or maaaaybe occam razor indicates she just wasn’t qualified to begin with and her dithering response to all this exposed that ?

Regardless of the merits of the allegations and the motivations of those involved, the optics of a wealthy Jewish banker using his money to oust a successful black woman from a position of leadership aren’t going to go away. When that backlash comes, it will be interesting to see what form it takes and how it breaks down among the population.

When Ackman decided to start claiming and spreading rumors that Gay only got the job because she's a Black woman he made quite clear what he really thinks. There are plenty of racist white people on the left too.

In the entire history of Harvard (dating back to colonial America), there has only been one Black president. And you want to tell me that she just happens to be the Harvard president who was unqualified for the job? Stop it.

Gay went to Stanford for undergrad and won the award for best undergrad thesis in economics. She then got her PhD at Harvard, where she won the award for best dissertation in political science. Stanford immediately hired her. She earned tenure there at a relatively young age. Harvard recruited her away from Stanford. They then made her Dean of Social Sciences. They promoted her again to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (i.e., the person who oversees Harvard's undergrad and grad programs in the Arts and Sciences, its largest "faculty"). After five years in that job, they promoted her to university president.

This is a woman who has elite credentials, was incredibly successful at the most elite institutions, and worked her way up the ladder at Harvard. But she was "unqualified" and a "DEI hire"? When somebody starts pushing that narrative, they're telling on themselves. They're saying that they assume when a Black person ends up in a position of power in an elite institution, their first thought is they didn't earn it. That's prejudice speaking, not "Occam's razor."

And while we're on the topic of "merit," Christopher Rufo helped hire Richard Corcoran, an unqualified mediocrity, to be president at New College and gave him an absolutely massive raise when compared to the previous president. Corcoran is unsurprisingly a white man and a Republican. Rufo has made the same accusations against Gay that Ackman has, despite Gay being 1000x more credentialed and qualified than Richard Corcoran. Funny how often people's conception of "merit" is people who look like them and think like them getting the job.

Lets not forget Ben Sasse who got the job over more qualified applicants (well they never really told us who they interviewed). Its a fiction that these jobs have anything to do with credentials. But elite liberals love credentials (and are sympathetic with Rufo in many ways), so the right can always use that with some people and get their way.

I didn’t say it would be the dominant explanation - but it’s there and isn’t going away. And I think it will find a more unified voice.

I’m not sure who y’all is, unless you’re using it in the singular, which is totally appropriate btw. Part of the beauty of the word. If so, I don’t like it when anyone gets cancelled, but that’s part of our constitutional system, short of tortious interference with contract or some such.

It already has a unified voice. It's the elitist establishment echo chamber, and it sings in perfect harmony like a finally tuned chorus, across an extraordinary swath of society.

And you're witnessing the backlash. The backlash is to the DEI. It'll go away in due course--bc it's racist and wrong, but we're still in its day, and the backlash--or rather, the CORRECTION--is in its infancy.

We're still trying to fix a lot of Barry's legacy--including Brandon's catastrophic presidency, beginning 1/20/25.

yeah, I’m sure you’re right. Lol. There will be no backlash at all and things from here on out will be all anti-DEI.

Ok, DEI will go down kicking and screaming, rather than fade away with a quiet whimper. I'll concede that much.

I just wouldn't call it 'backlash', since it was horseshit from the git, and is just being called out as such.

I sorta wonder why conservatives think getting rid of DEI is a better track than hijacking the "E" and "I" part of that to make sure they get their POV represented. In theory a "liberal" school without DEI could just tell conservative speakers or student groups to take a hike.

I think you and I are talking about two different things. My post isn’t really about DEI, and I can see that this discussion is heading for tedious and remedial, so I’ll leave it at that

I don't understand why this has become such a right vs left thing. For crying out loud, this is Harvard, shouldn't we all agree that the president of such an esteemed university by the entire world be somewhat better than average? I find it hard to find anything on Ms Gay that makes her anything about average and possibly with the sheer number of potential plagiarism accusations below average. They obviously have the right to hire anyone they want, but when they use black liberal female as prerequisite for consideration, the available field of potential candidates gets limited. So, they are reaping what they sowed which is a national embarrassment!

    Respect.

My apologies if we were talking past one another, but either way, I don't do rabbit holes, and if that's where this was headed, well then you beat me to it.

    Good day sir.

They think getting rid of DEI means getting rid of the minorities who have taken the spots that conservatives deserve.

Why should we care who the president of Harvard is at all? Can you even name a past president of Harvard without looking it up? I'm sure they've had any number of bland mediocrities. Its a job for glad-handers, the well-connected and people good at getting rich people to give them money - its basically politics. UF has certainly had plenty of unimpressive people running things, and currently employs one as its president. Harvard is a school that admits plenty of people who couldn't get in without connections or being good at a sport.

There is no indication that being a black female was a pre-requisite to her hiring. Why do you think it was?
