So you prefer status quo. Hope you realize that Trump just shut down your only chance for getting something done for the next 20 years. Any bill will require 60 votes in the Senate which you will never see. Congratulations MAGA and congratulations to Trump, America's Snowflake

Well yeah, he wanted to pass it. It was stupid for the Dems to put it forward but they wanted to take the issue off the table and defeat Trump. Why would you do that if you already defeated him? Maybe adopt your own border policy since you just won the election?

I was going to say this. Many Democrats did not want this and only agreed after Biden got on board in an effort to couple with aid to Ukraine. Whether they would do so going forward is unclear to me.

Myth: This bill will let 5,000 migrants into the country per day.
Fact: The bill ends catch and release. The new Border Emergency Authority (BEA) closes the border to prevent the system from being overwhelmed.
In December of 2023, there were over 300,000 migrant encounters along the southwest border. These historically high numbers have overwhelmed the system. Currently, most migrants approaching the border are released into the interior of the country. The bill ends catch and release by detaining and removing individuals quickly, and placing those who cannot be detained into non-custodial rapid processing under government supervision. The bill creates a rapid consequence system: those who do not have valid claims to asylum will be quickly removed from the country.
When the number of people approaching the border exceeds our ability to process them, DHS will now have a new authority – called the Border Emergency Authority – to stop migrant surges that overwhelm the border. This authority allows DHS to quickly reassert control of the border and the system.
The BEA is a backstop for use in emergency situations. If the number of migrants attempting to cross the border – including migrants using the CBP One app at Ports of Entry – continues at its current high pace, the border WILL be shut down.

If the daily average of migrant encounters reaches 5,000 over a week, DHS must close the border indefinitely until numbers fall and DHS has processing capacity and operational control of the border.
    ● 5,000 refers to total migrants attempting to cross the border – not the number of individuals allowed into the country, as some have claimed. The bill ends the practice of catch and release.
    ● All migrant encounters – with or without BEA in effect – will be processed using the new removal authority. Those who seek asylum will undergo a swift Protection Determination Interview at the higher screening standard and will be immediately removed from the country if they fail.
The border will not reopen until numbers reduce to a level that allows DHS to regain operational control for a sustained period.

see above. 1.8 million would only be reached if you had 4,999 every day but never went over. That’s not the way it plays out.
So we want to just deport unaccompanied children and sex trafficking victims, no questions asked?
Last time I checked while these numbers of days are less than 365, they are much greater than zero. is that not improvement?

If there were a crisis, like in Cuba, or Israel, or Ukraine, or somewhere, would you not want the president to have discretion to allow more immigrants? If during WWII would we want the ability to let Jews into the country?
I see nothing about sanctuary cities - do we not want to provide funding to deal with unaccompanied children? Really?
Really? Oppose legal counsel for unaccompanied children, mentally incompetent, and unaccompanied children less than 13? Seriously?
So we are now against green cards and immigrants that are here to work?
Do you really want to require the president to deport illegals?
    Wait, so this is bad?

Isn’t faster processing what we want? I’m so confused.

That only goes up to 2022. In the last 6-8 months we've actually seen a decline for the first time in forever.

She's a blowhard. She prosecuted and then released them. First she's for legalizing pot then turns around and prosecutes a record number of blacks for smoking pot. She's the ultimate flip-flopper. Her idea of a border bill is no border.

Hate to say it for all those that said Trump didn't pass anything as President, he's not the one to pass bills, he signs the ones Congress passes to him. People in this country are a bunch of idiots actually wanting and expecting the President to run all 3 branches of government.

For those that dispute what I just said:

The executive branch of the United States government is responsible for enforcing the laws passed by Congress. The branch is made up of the president, their advisors, and various departments and agencies. The president is the head of the executive branch and has many responsibilities, including:
    • Appointing the heads of federal agencies, including the Cabinet
    • Executing and enforcing laws created by Congress
    • Serving as head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces
There is no mention of any kind where the POTUS ever writes the laws or bills. If so, what you all want is a dictator. You just plainly said it above and I'm reading about it on CNN every single day. My issue is with Congress. They are too partisan to get anything done over the last 35 years. The only time they agree on anything is in times of crisis, which we don't need.

Not sure if anyone remembers the special election in New York to replace George Santos. The Republican candidate tried to make illegal immigration a major issue. Tom Suozzi the Democrat flipped the script emphasizing that it was the Republicans who blocked the bipartisan immigration bill. Apparently, the strategy worked considering that Souzzi won by an eight percentage point margin. Harris seems to following Souzzi's blueprint and it may very be effective. While it won't have any effect on Trump's hardcore nativist supporters who will vote for him no matter what it could persuade those undecided voters in the middle who still actually think about the issue.
Could how Democrat Tom Suozzi campaigned on immigration help his party win nationally?
After former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi won the special election in New York's 3rd Congressional District this week by campaigning on more border security, other Democrats are saying the takeaway message is that their party needs to go "on the offense" on immigration.

The issue was a flashpoint of the special election, especially as migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border reached a record high of 302,000 in December and apprehensions hit a historic peak of 2.2 million in fiscal year 2022. Over 100,000 migrants have been transported to Democrat-led cities like Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

Facing attacks from his opponent Mazi Pilip over what she called Democrats' failed border policies, Suozzi stressed during his campaign that he supported both tightening immigration laws and finding a bipartisan compromise, including supporting a failed deal recently announced in the Senate.
