Pick the score, the Most Valuable Gator (MVG), and the Stat of the Game (SoG). For this game, SoG will be freethrow margin. Baylor averages 27.6 attempts/game and the Gators avg 28/game. Which team will get to the line more? (+3 = Gators have 3 more FTs than the Bears) My pick: Gators 76 Baylor 74 MVG Pullin SoG +2
Crazy scoring in this game, esp. with the Baylor shooting . Nobody could come closer than 18 pts from the final score. These three were at 18.
Sog: Gators were +2 on FT attempts. Given hindsight, SoG would have had something to do with 3pt shooting.
Good game, Gators. Not thrilled to see a 95 spot, but Baylor was unconscious from the arc. Wish we could put a complete team on the court, what with the defection of Mr. Yale and Handlogten's injury. Kugel had his biggest output of the season, but it wasn't as efficient as Samuel's game. Lotta folks had Samuel for top performer. I understand the metric you use for MVG and that is what will be used and I am OK with that but it takes away from the stellar game Kugel had taking Baylor's best offensive player out of the game. It doesn't have to be by steals and blocks or other stats. It is stuff that he did that won't show up in a box score but coaches and scouts will see it. Added in edit: Everybody knew how good Vernon Maxwell was as a scorer but very few fans knew how great he was as a defender. He was special.
I bet Vernon would have had a bunch of top VPS scores . Early indicators suggest that if Kugel got to the FT line more often, he would be higher on the MVG board. He's sixth on the team in FT attempted. That's only one factor preventing his domination of the mvg. As for today's game, he was great. It's why he's listed in the top 3. To your point about shutting down a player, I wonder how you would have me measure it? Perhaps I should calculate the shooting percentage of each opponent in accordance w the defending player(s) for each shot taken. Or I could go back to zero pts for mvg; but then y'all would have less cause to quibble . Take a look at the season numbers. The guys meriting top player status are earning it.
