Tony Gwynn and Rod Carew were two guys that always battled for league leading batting averages but had much lower OBPs that you would think. In Gwynn's career he had a .338 batting average but his OBP was only .388. Carew was .328/.393. These guys didn't walk much. Tony gave no advice about taking pitches.
if you think about it from a pitcher’s perspective, throwing them strikes makes sense. They were both single hitters, throw them a strike and it’s 50/50 you get an out. Throw them a ball and 100 percent you give up that base. So their walk rate should have been low.
