With his grade issues, and no school with any ounce of integrity able to let him in, I assumed he would end up at uga.

"We" should be "Me", as I think you have to be the only one who would say that. I believe "We" would have greatly preferred McCall over Mertz!!!

As I understand it, Tommy, you are spot on. Grayson had credits that would not transfer, which meant he would have to take those classes over again. Who would want to do that?

Yeah, that’s a long running joke in recruiting. Not sure how you missed that one.

Someone who would like to graduate from a more prestigious university and make millions more per year in the NFL because of showing he can compete in the SEC?

I took classes over again. Well, a F or I did not count towards graduation.

You would be surprised (or maybe you were just being sarcastic). So many "student-athletes" really don't care much about the student part. When they transfer, they often (with the help of the coach or school) chose a major that allows the most credits to count....so they can be eligible. In this kid's case, it sounds as if he earned C- or less in some schools and most legtimate schools will not transfer those credits. I imagine that if he still had enough degree-countable credits upon transfer to meet percentage of degree requirements, he would care less about having to repeat a class...or two or three.

While there are definitely many exceptions, especially in sports other than football and basketball (e.g., tennis, gymnastics), I regularly chuckle at the term "student-athlete" or "scholar-athlete." More and more, it seems, really don't value the education....unfortunateley.

If he’s after an education, no freaking way. If he’s trying to get to the NFL, it might not be necessary either. He can get to the NFL from right where he is. On top of that, if it were me, I could see transferring to a team that might go to the playoffs next year but I would not want to be part of a rebuild

I hardly cared about the student part, and I was no athlete…besides intramurals.

Man that just reminded of intramural flag football and how much fun it was. I’m pretty sure we played 4v4. Some serious athletes showed up

I repeated Math 301 - best decision I could have made. 2nd time around I got it. When you have 302, 303, 304, and 305 ahead of you and you don’t understand 301, drastic measures are warranted

UF tells football players majors they cannot have due to conflicts with practice (know this first hand). From youth, good athletes are often steered toward easy classes, praised not for intelligence but athleticism, and often allowed to slide academically. Especially kids with parents who did not have academic backgrounds or are poor (working a lot).

It is easy to blame the kids but they are a product of our society ... as is NIL. When the core values of systems from conferences to coaches to fans are winning and money, hard to expect academics, teamwork, commitment emerge from kids. If the NCAA/conferences/schools valued education, they would have done something serious (death penalty) to the schools caught engaged in blatant widespread academic fraud.

My wife has had many a coach come to her office privately and ask, what can WE do to ensure that athlete X on team X passes his classes.
