If we land a proven portal talent like Leary, McCall, Pratt, Hartmann, etc., I find it hard to believe that Miller will do enough in the bowl game to keep one of those guys on the bench. Based on what little we've seen of JM, I'm not even sure he could keep Rashada on the bench past mid-season next year. He just hasn't dazzled me with either his physical talent or his command of the game. Maybe he'll surprise me. But for now, I'm thinking he's average at best and we can do better in the portal. JMHO.
Kinda odd to say when all anyone has seen of Miller is a spring game appearance with just a few months to learn the offense. He has had this entire season now to study the O and months of practice. He is likely a different QB.
Competiton is always good, and a credible showing in the bowl game would be encouraging. But the question is how good is Miller when compared to any one of several portal QBs we are said to be pursuing? Especially in light of the tremendous gap in game experience that would exist between JM and the leading portal prospects. I know this is all hypothetical and that "what if" questions can be fun to kick around. But there is almost zero tangible evidence that Miller is a long-term solution to the QB question. I'm not hatin' on the guy, but that is how I see it at this point in time. If he proves me wrong, I prefer my crow grilled with plenty of Worcestershire sauce.
That’s why his showing vs OSUw will not have anything to do with how attractive we look to potential transfers. We are going after an experienced guy, period. Just saying Jack being good is good for us. No need to dog him without seeing him play.
This is exactly what I was thinking. He has experienced dozens of practices, knows exactly where the coaches want him to throw the ball on every play, watched how they coached AR throughout the season, watched countless hours of film with his coaches and teammates, stayed late to run routes with the current WRs, been through 12 defensive breakdown sessions, etc... I'm on the other side of the fence -- I think he is the front runner. If you base your opinion on the spring game you need to re-watch it. He had the 2nd string O vs mostly 1st team D. The right side of the OL could not handle the rush and he had no time. I think the bowl game will be a fairly good assessment of what he can do. He's missing a few WRs and his All American OG but I think just about everyone else is playing.
This is when I defer judgment to our head football coach, Napier. If he wants a portal QB then he probably has a very good reason to get one. All the other talk about Miller is just our speculation. I hope it's McCall...
Perhaps, but it might be instructive to recall that he's been the runner-up in two QB competitions already, and if not for the Kitna mess, he almost certainly wouldn't be starting the bowl game either. And FTR, there's nothing "speculative" or premature in a recitation of established fact. Could he possibly flip the switch and do things he's never done before? Maybe, but I for one won't be holding my breath, no matter what he does in the bowl game. Time will tell. Over and out.
Grayson McCall grew up walking distance from where I currently live. My take: crisp execution, average or below average arm strength but decisive, accurate and throws a catchable ball.
You and I agree on most things. Just thought you jumped the gun here on your assessment of Jack…and now it looks like you feel the need to double down on his future failures.

McCall also threw fewer interceptions in three seasons as Coastal Carolina's starter (eight) than Richardson did just this season (nine).
