Grantham seems to be one of those guys like Hoke, Zaunbrecher, and others whose reputation by the fans are worse than the reputations by professionals: Year----Total Def----3d Dn Conv Def 2017...........31st...............22d 2018...........28th...............51st 2019.............9th...............40th 2020............83d................72d 2021............51st................32d 2022............96th...............128th 2023............69th.................35th 2024.............91st.................84th In the last three years, two of our last three defenses had worse total defense and 3d down conversion numbers than in any of Grantham's seasons. This is one of those myths that will never die, sort of like the 20 kittens that would die each game after Zaun would call 20 bubble screens a game (he called 2-3 per game).
He was already dead man walking after this last season. I think he negotiated a contract salary reduction. Hiring Grantham tells me he wants to end his suffering and commit suicide. Oh.... weren't there posters here that wanted to hire him?
Well, if history is a guide: 1 2024........3-9 2 2023.......10-4 3 2022.........7-6 4 2021.......12-2 5 2020.........8-3 6 2019.........8-5 7 2018.........7-6 8 2017.......10-3 9 2016.......10-3 10 2015.....10-3 11 2014.......7-6 12 2013.....10-3 13 2012.......8-5 14 2011.....12-1 15 2010.....11-2 16 2009.......9-4 17 2008.......9-4 18 2007.......7-6 19 2006 ......7-6 20 2005 ......4-7 Total:.........257-169 (.658) Particularly when the team went 110-117-3 (.485) for 20 years prior to Gundy's arrival. And no, the vast sustained improvement wasn't entirely due to T. Boone's money. "Dead Man Walking" after 20 years of that record? But yeah, it is understandable that after Muschamp, McElwain, Mullen and Napier, Mike Gundy would have been considered a proven commodity...
Reports are that if he didn't take a pay cut he was out. Dude would have failed here. Completely different level of competition.
Do we care? Grantham lives in an RV so moving is not a big problem. Grundy may have to go that route.
What? The same competition Mack Brown and Bob Stoops faced? No, we can't use the easy "they play in the Big 12" excuse. So did Texas, Texas A&M and Mizzou. Compare the two from their conferences to "The Gauntlet!" School-----SEC-----------------Big XII A&M..........105-58 (.644)......87-73 (.544) Mizzou........95-68 (.583).......85-73 (.538) There is no dreaded "Gauntlet" coming inside the SEC. A&M and Mizzou got no worse, and 2024 notwithstanding, Oklahoma and Texas won't have that much of a learning curve, either. The entire notion that an X-win SEC team is as good or better than an X+2 win OOC team is ridiculous and is not proven by the statistics.
That’s fine! A kitty has nine lives as well. As Mr. T would say, “I pity the fool that hires that sorry Todd Grantham”
