Floridians, by and large and regardless of political leanings take natural resources of the state very seriously. They will engage. Many big money projects have been stopped even after construction has begun and considerable funds have been expended. The Everglades jetport (would have been the world’s largest airport) and the city that would have surrounded it was halted and only a runway on the edge of Big Cypress Nat’l Preserve remains. It was halted Once the scale of environmental destruction became known thanks to the press and grassroots environmental groups.

Barges do not traverse peninsular FL because the Cross Florida Barge Canal was halted even though land had been purchased, bridges rebuilt and lifted, and dredging begun. Thanks largely to local opposition and finally by an EO by Nixon.

Read FDEP’s Mission Statement and it is difficult to see how the destruction of a remnant of maritime forest and dune system fits within:

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) mission is to protect, conserve, and manage the state's natural resources. The DEP's vision is to advance Florida's position as a world leader in protecting natural resources while growing the state's economy.

From the link. Disgusted that they try and couch their Delaware corporation with no lists of equity holders like this
Every application I file for development requires full ownership disclosure regardless of where they are domiciled.

"While they are withdrawing their proposal, the foundation worked with the state to pursue a project that would have created a public, world class golf course for all, while supporting veterans, first responders and their families. Their plan to honor the Tuskegee Airmen was noble."

What is the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation?

Because of Delaware's strict corporate privacy rules, no information about anyone connected to the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation is available. The foundation, which was incorporated in August 2021, is listed as having $436 in delinquent taxes, according to the Delaware Division of Corporations.

people do hunt them year round for fun/skins but the "roundup" with scoring and prizes is just a short window. I know that one group (FWC I think) has used trackers on males and leave them out there. Once so many males show up at the same spot, they go in and take the female that the males are lined up for. Taking out one big egg laying female is much more effective than taking out 20 males

That's a good strategy. They should kill the 20 males too. The devastation on small mammals and deer is too great. They don't have a lot of natural predators, maybe us.

Had a friend - a wildlife professor at UF who wanted to know if the problem was big enough to look into some years ago. As a look-see he put radio-collars on 20 rabbits and released them into Everglades NP. Every one of them was eaten by a python. A small mammal survey indicated there were no small mammals left in the park uplands. I knew some kids doing graduate work down there and they necropsied a large python and found the remains of 3 different white-tailed deer. Its a problem.

agreed, lack of prey is bigger threat to panthers than cars or anything else at this point. still not sure how to enforce a condition that requires monitoring and removal of exotic animals in addition to exotic plants. I suspect that feral hogs are biggest thing keeping panthers fed now but that is just a guess.

isn't Jekyll Island a state park that has all of this being proposed. It seems to fit well and have a good flow.

Sounds like media doing their job to me and most of the public seems to agree it's a bad idea. I'm a hacker and there are plenty of golf courses around already.

That barge canal right of way is now called the Florida greenway, and has some great trails … so something good came out of it,

Leftist have been waiting for their chance to jump on DeSantis for something... This seems like the prefect storm. But as I said, keep the golf courses we have... with tax breaks if they have to, but do not build hotels and golf courses on state parks.
