I don't know anything about the proposal and haven't even read the thread or links yet. I suspect that the feds may have contributed to something at the parks at some point and that funding comes with some sort of commitments. Personally think it is a terrible idea s lots of golf courses already are having problems staying open. frisbee golf is much less invasive and isa good pasive rec use that requires little maintenance or destruction of natural areas if it is properly routed. this reeks of property owner (or option to buy) with large tract next to state park(s) wanting amenity for development on state land to enhance the adjacent property value.

if we still had investigative journalists, that is the path they should follow to find the real motivation. who owns/controls the adjacent land that could be developed or has options to buy it.

This is what happens when you have developers on state commissions. Like Gary Nicklaus on the FWC. Supposedly Jack Nicklaus wanted to do something along these lines in 2011 but public outcry was overwhelming.

Didn't realize this was in the DeSantis thread, but seems like it's own thread is warranted. Thanks

Thanks. Yeah my first thought is who possible benefits some such and unpopular proposal. Has to be developers or cronies

Same as in 2011 when Rick Scott and Thrasher proposed it.

One of our county commissioners is now in a runoff with a guy backed by big developer money

Update: Orange commission race headed for runoff, not recount

The number of golfers and golf courses have been declining for a while. I talked with a guy whose company owns some courses and manages others. He acknowledged that dads are out at their kids soccer and baseball games on Saturday. And the state wants to spend money to build and maintain courses while taking state park land ... to build more courses?

Everyone should be against it. I hate that developers can take down Grand Oaks much less move into our state parks. We will win this one. DeSantis will be scarred forever with this move.

Given the amount of water required to maintain a golf course, even in Florida where it rains regularly, its ridiculous to be building more for any reason, let alone at state expense in state parks.

Very good point! Not only does commercial development of purposely conserved natural habitat make little sense, the waste of water to maintain golf courses on Florida’s sandy (often xeric/droughty) soils makes even less sense. Terrible idea.

Camped at Anastasia last week. There are miles of condos and hotels past the park. Pickleball and frisbee golf. Lmfao.

Translation, cheap lease for some companies to operate Hotels..

Good point. Also Not many public golf courses are profitable.
Florida already has more golf courses than any other state - 1,250 and most are open to the public. But where big money goes Rhonda will follow.

Anastasia...so many memories there back when we could drive the entire beach down to the jetties and sleep overnight out there in the early 80's. Spent so many weekends out there surfing, fishing, sleeping in the bed of the old chevy pickup..good times days long gone by

this is promising. I think it's all the meetings, not just Jonathan Dickinson.
