I never had any dislike for the man.

Never understood why others did - but to each their own.

Enjoy your evening along with your son, @gatorranger7 !

Coach Meyer is one of the best college head coaches of all time.

Why wouldn't you want someone like him to speak at your function.

    Guy's a legend!

I’m thankful for the championships, but the man does not have much honor. Now, if we ever change it to the ring of kicking ass, he is definitely in.

Heck Bazza, I've got no animosity against Urbs, I was just thinking of the football school of Tennessee, that THEY would pick someone from their own program, a former or current Vol........ Surprised to hear that Doering has spoken there a few times, good for him. Shoot Coach Spurrier is from Tennessee, so is James "Batesey" Bates (a.k.a. Luther Ogle)....... :) Maybe they will get an invite?..... LOL

    GO GATORS!!!!

Never really get the animosity to Meyer. He coached 2 of our 3 national championships.

He always seemed to be a guy who burned at both ends with great intensity, which possibly helped make him great, but he couldn’t pace himself and inevitably would burn out.

Bottom line after the mediocre 2010 season I’m not sure many people were sad to see him go. So then being bitter that he went to OSU a year later seems a bit hypocritical.

My recollection he had an out in his contract for ND, OSU or Mich if the job came up. I may be wrong on that. Obviously he never took it while at UF.

OK thanks, Gorn.....just trying to set the record straight - that's all.

Believe it or not......there are MORE good folks who are rivals than people realize. I've run into them (usually their ball cap gives it away :D) and love striking up a convo. Florida is a highly respected school and sports program by the other schools so all we have to do is act like a good person - a good sport - and conversations are much more fun and interesting!

  11. I finally checked out the website for the Knoxville Quarterback Club. Apparently they get guests from all around the country—no Tennessee affiliation is necessary. Mark Richt, Rick Neuheisel, Chris Doering, and others have spoken at these events.

The fact that Urban Meyer said he has no plans on returning to coaching leads me to believe he actually plans on returning.

If he wants to get into the UF Ring of Honor he will need to rescue kittens from burning buildings and talk to more Gator social media personalities other than Buddy Martin.

I think your perspective is skewed by the fact of your active participation in a fan site message board. (Not a shot at you BTW - I am the same.) Most UF fans likely have opinions less hardened on the subject of Urban Meyer in specific and in general would read the RoH criteria and wonder why he had not been done already.

My opinion on the matter has changed a lot since the heated days around his departure and I consider the great acclaim he brought to the school and have come around to thinking he deserves to be recognized as such. We don't have specific codicils in the criteria that exclude personal behaviors (that I know of, that is) and if we did, they'd likely be for more objective criteria than fans hurt feelings, etc.

What a great post- thank you.
It's amazing to me how so many have to vilify or beatify someone. I guess it's a symptom of our extreme political polarization.

In truth most of us- all of us?- are a complex mixture of a lot of things.
Meyer was crazy ambitious and obsessive- far more than most CFB coaches. And that is saying something.
This brought us a lot of good things- but shock- it also left a lot of damage.
Our broken program, broken locker room, out-of-control players, and many more bad things.
    Probably damage to his family.

Unless you think he's the greatest actor/ conman of all time- he was broken too when he left.
But guys- 11 months is a long time to be without work- esp. for a youngish workaholic like Meyer.
It's not crazy/ unreasonable to think 11 months was enough time to re-charge and heal.
Esp. when his dream job opened up.

Just my 2 cents. I'm agnostic about whether he gets into the ROH.

Thank you for your kind words. Just trying to contribute to the discussions here.

He spoke to this yesterday. He talked about the need for balance, and that he said he had lived most of his adult life with priorities out of whack due to his obsessive behavior, that he was very fortunate to still have his family and healthy relationships. He said the first 12 months away from any coaching were very hard. Had to physically restrain himself from looking for options, etc. Finally came to realize how many things he'd left undone, and how much he appreciates being able to just "up and do things" with Shelly.

Interesting comment: Talking about getting the call from the chair of the QB club to come speak, and after he accepted, Shelly told him "Don't drink or eat anything you don't know where its been and keep someone on your right and left the whole time." I'd say the two of them have had some air-clearing conversations in the past few years. Marriage isn't easy with the best of circumstances. That they are still together says much about them...and her.

I'm sure there is some theatrics/posing in his talk, but it came across as sincere...unpolished.

Gainesville QB club is the same way. We had some awesome “non-UF” speakers back in the day. Every year SOS would show up which was of course the highlight. However, we had Ray Goff, Tim Brando, Tommy Tuberville, and a bunch of others. It was a lot of fun.

“Leaving us broken” and joining the buck nuts and all the jag-days ass grabbing and kicker kicking, I don’t really care. He had some great years with us; totally worth it. But promoting the dazzler as the offensive coordinator was a sin against god and man.

Can’t support him for ROH. I’m fine with thanking him for the two Nats, but we all have to agree to some degree or another that there was little honor in his ways.

As a fan, I loved the winning, as a father, I would not have wanted my boys playing for him.

I think that he is most likely done coaching. He is an opportunist, and a good one. He walks into programs where the prior coach recruited well, but played /started a lot of freshmen and Sophs and didn’t win with them. Everywhere he has gone except Jax, he inherited a great roster. He is not a builder. He can’t take the frustrations that come with building like Coach Napier has taken over the last 20 months.

Unless UGA dumps Kirby at the end of the season I don’t see many loaded guns laying around the country looking for a marksman. Of course, I am mainly hoping for them to Dump Kirby and promote Muschamp to Head Coach.

And I sure agree with yourSon. I’ll always be thankful for the time Urban Meyer was Coach of the Gators. 6 winning seasons. 2 National Championships and Heisman Trophy winner in Tim Tebow who some thought he’d be going to Alabama. And a very nice personal experience where he sure showed a lot of kindness.
