TE smokes two dudes to the edge on opening KO and K barely saves the TD. Perfect dime beats cover 6 LSU blows for TD. Lingard makes something of nothing on first carry. O’Cyrus missed as Leonard played high effort but just not the same results as an NFL-ready OL. You can’t follow the H back to the ball like most teams because the zone blocking is so good that you might run right into a big run, as LSU did early with MJ. ILB went with Zip who was a good two gaps outside of the gap MJ housed it in. LSU also has a S problem—but this one clearly don’t want none. Passing game continues to appear to be routes that are generally workable against multiple D looks instead of tailored to beat the specific look of the moment. AR makes nice read NOT throwing to second read Pearsall as LSU had it baited, then shows why the back-to-the-field PA is so stubbornly persistent when it gets Zanders wide open on the GL but AR quick-shots it behind him. MJ cleans it up next play dozing CB one on one. All teams now keep a guy, DE typically, to AR’s right anticipating rollouts. It’s limiting the throwing windows and you can see it likely cause the slightest of over-lead to a wide open Pearsall. Blown pass pro when B gap rush gets home as RB crosses over to the other side. MJ with nice pass pro pickup, AR buys time and finds Pearsall with a dart. In what is by now a familiar play: two man route with a checkdown, max protect. Pearsall runs out and up and pulls it off but is blatantly held (no call.) Shorter maybe tiny window. Henderson alone flaring wide. AR ends up running for 3. Shoulda gone for the bomb. Maybe try to wedge it in to Shorter. Henderson mos def wide open as last read. But the play was basically 2 on 4, so the Pearsall win was not to be expected. IOW, Florida is blocking 4 with 7, running two routes on 4 defenders, and three are basically hanging out waiting for the scramble. A variation of this action happens 7-8 times a game and so far has been barely effective at all. Something needs to change, even it is a simple as hitting the check downs in the flats. Back to general vs. targeted passing game: LSU shows single high S, deep and dead middle. Almost certainly either cover 1 man or cover 3/6. It turns out to be cover 3. We run a mesh route with a sit route on one end and a go on the other. The mesh route is simply not good for this as there are four zone defenders under the 3 deep. The go is covered, the sit is given. We also have pressure, AR hits MJ late and he is unable to shake a guy in the open field. BN essentially decides to run the clock out. Curious enough, but he elects to set up a Hail Mary. As is the flavor of the day, LSU brings six to eliminate the QB dancing around. It works. Why teams don’t hot route a simple completion that is going to put you at 5 or even 6 on 6 in open field is still a mystery. So far teams are just taking the blow-up, as we did. Leonard apparently was Doing Too Much all game. In the stadium away from camera shots he was evidently plowing into piles like he did on the big Pearsall catch (perfect read, set, laser from AR, also missed low hit play). He finally got the flag. Lingard catches a ball behind him, Tarquin makes a strategic error engaging D player too early and pushing him directly into LL’s line, then LL simply power sleds him for six yards and a first down. More LL for me, please. Lingard on the GT counter! One man from going big, LL might want a do over, but still a healthy gain. OL work stellar. Another AR trend: early and hot on short game. Needs to learn to let WR’s do work, stay calm, smooth throws after time for separation. Short game in general really not a thing for Florida. Rifles a bullet too soon to Shorter on 4th down. You should rewatch the AR run and some of the WTH stuff LSU defenders did. I don’t have an explanation other than they really didn’t want to catch that train. The TD rate once Florida gets close is exceptional. This should only get better with time. 4th and 20: not one WR actually runs a route to the sticks. Not nearly as frustrating as the D film. Missed O’Cyrus but Leonard was (maybe too) game and O had moments. Lingard looking good in real moments. AR had no disasters and mostly good stuff. Not exactly dominant but solid enough to get you through most games, or maybe most seasons, IMO.
So, teams learn your tendencies as the season goes on. Hmm, interesting! The way you succeed, either the QB or the HC/OC, is to realize YOUR tendencies and then punish teams who think they know better. Maybe after the bye week, we will be prepared to take advantage of their smugness. We shall see.
I griped about the rollout in the first quarter and my family asked why? I said for that same reason. Always under pressure and it takes amazing athleticism for him to make a play more often than not.If teams continue to use the exact same tendencies to play us why not exploit them. The video makes a good case criticizing the mesh route into 4 defenders who can just pass off the routes and always have a numbers advantage while wasting blockers on the line of scrimmage. Showed how getting rid of the play fake portion on the screen play lead to Henderson making a good gain. The play fakes aren't executed well and therefore aren't respected which just allows time for a defender to cover the flat. Also pointed out another of my gripes which is the hesitation for the check downs. Many times the check downs would yield good gains with a bit more decisiveness.
