Went out for dinner tonight and the SEC network was replaying Saturday’s game. I couldn’t help but to watch. It made me even madder than the live game and ruined dinner.
The fact that we brought in an executive whatever the hell and that's the defensive performance boggles the mind.
That was fun. It appears that our safeties are being told to free float (which can work if you have world class safeties with high football IQ's). Fundamentals ignored all over the field. These kids *neeeeed* coaching. Scared Money gotta go. ...and the longer we wait, the worse out team players suffer. Hopefully right after Miss St.
If you have 3 people doing one job it means that nobody is actually doing it. Same as having one person do two jobs, like BN trying to be the head coach and OC. Say these things now and everyone agrees but say them last year at this time and get burned at the stake as a heretic. It all boils down to him not doing his 2 jobs well. Maybe that's why they're two jobs, because one person isn't supposed to try to do both. Even those considered to be great offensive minds usually have an offensive coordinator on staff. Billy is not a great offensive mind. Should have spent his time finding competent staff, which is actually his only job.
I've listened to Spurrier on Julie's podcast and Steve Russell's show yesterday. I don't think Napier is getting fired anytime soon based on what the headball coach is saying. Specifically he said we're paying these guys a bunch of money we need to give him a chance to coach them up and that we don't have anybody on staff to replace him. The more I think about it the more I think that's the correct play. There's really nothing we can do to fix the situation that we are in right now. Plus, from what I've heard it opens the door for kids to announce for the portal and we don't want that.
Did he really say that we have nobody in staff who could take over? What an indictment of the program and the AD. How is that possible? Out of the entire army of coaches and analysts, not a single one is qualified to be an interim HC? Part of the "process" should be hiring the best in the business. A competent AD should understand who is being brought onto this massive staff. This is insane. If I were Heavener, I'd want my money back on that magnificent facility. All of the great steps to help create a solid and sustainable program, and BN and SS didn't do the most important part - hire great coaches to lead these kids. SMDH........
Why wait? These coaches have had 2 1/2 years to coach em up. Time to cut bait. Make somebody interim coach and get rid of all the dead weight. Damn the AD for hiring this Sorry head coach.
The baffling thing to me is how clueless the players are, especially the safeties. These were talented recruits who obviously had played a lot of ball before they came to UF, but they act like they are on a football field for the first time. Did they forget everything they learned along the way? Can't tackle, take ridiculously stupid angles to the ball, haven't a clue who they should cover, etc. It is really weird to watch this in slo mo.
IMHO, keeping Naptime through the season, is giving up on the team, the season, and Naptime, when the only thing Gator Nation is actually giving up on, is Naptime. Did you watch the video? The athleticism is there. The talent is there. The scheming, play calling, and strategy is what's grotesquely missing. That, and neglect of fundamentals. The former is fixable in the 2 weeks bt MSU and UCF with a competent coach. The latter might take a little more time, but we're talking fundamentals here, not sophisticated/ advance stuff. Should be a matter of review, refreshing, and practice, practice, practice (shit that shoulda been hammered home long ago, and in the off season, but of course, time moves in one direction--forward--so you negotiate the terrain as you find it...). Again, "Scared money don't make money", and Naptime = Scared. Ass. Money (incredibly ironic, I know...). You're taking about banking on our players sticking around AFTER we give up on them??? Good luck with that. Another empty promise is all you're offering them. Hell with that. Give them a fighting chance on THIS season--and Scared Money/Naptime categorically does NOT.
I don't understand how you could watch this film and come to that conclusion. This staff is regressive, the players are getting worse. The portal is inevitable, why should that have any bearing on the decision?
Well, so we think. But what's the difference between this year so far and last? The Defense cannot get pressure, and our secondary gets torched. To me, they are running last year's scheme, whatever that is, and Roberts is doing his best calling the same D. Not cutting Roberts any slack, just don't see it as Roberts since we went from bad to still bad.
His description for the few times our safeties tackle someone “they are wrestled gently to the ground.” 3 straight years (coached by Toney now AA) try to avoid contact at all costs. Absolute insanity.
I'm not saying not to fire him. Which coach on this staff is going to change anything? Do you think firing him NOW is going to change the defense somehow? Someone has to coach the team. He can be dead man walking as far as I'm concerned and then fire him later. Saves us from having to deal with a whole host of issues. IMO, nothing about this team gets better from firing him more as opposed to later in the schedule. The only benefit is people will stop talking about him getting fired. If the players quit, which I don't think they have done, that's a different story.
The difference is success rate. UF D actually had a good SR last year but because of missed tackles (mostly) they gave up huge plays. Again the player was put in a position by the coach to make the stop, they didn't get it done. This year it's back to busted coverages, blitzes from Narnia, passive run fit on top of bad tackling. There is a play where they had 3 WR vs our 2 CB by alignment. How do they have any chance of being successful?
