One thing not discussed here: James loves our rush offensive design. Gushes over it frequently. Not necessarily the rush into a loaded box part. But otherwise.

What characteristics would you attribute to an OL built for the spread?

Not at all they hit on 2 plays one of which Billy wouldn’t have thrown. Otherwise we had better yds/att. But the old saying is you miss 100% of shots you dont take

Definitely not 6’ 7/8” 340+ tackles. The line as a whole isnt mobile/agile for lateral movement that is why we narrow our line splits to try and get a hat and pad on the opponent bc the’re in tight quarters.

Did you see the Colorado OL get terrorized by the ducks DL? Same concept

I was anticipating this response and it's why I asked. BN runs a lot of zone blocking schemes, it is arguably the thing he does the best. Generally speaking, key word generally, an OL deploying zone blocking needs to be more agile and capable of lateral movement. UF shows this on film many times where the entire line will go left and attempt to "hook" DE's or DT's to create the run lanes, often with a TE coming right to pick up the edge defender on the other side to prevent pursuit or create potential cut back lanes. Having said that, I would disagree that the OL BN wants is ill suited for a spread. However, it is also just as possible that the current roster is not actually as well suited to BN's zone blocking which is a part of why we see some struggles.

Maybe. The guy coming next year is pretty agile and I bet he plays early. Our roster is huge but not so much the guys actually playing.

By definition the spread also has bigger OL splits along with the receivers a greater distance from the ball.

Actually zone blocking is blocking an area not a man per se. Narrower lanes it easier to pick up ‘moving’ defenders (stunting/blitzing/twisting) not non- stationary. Th oline work in pairs to account for DL and LBs they attempt to keep their hios and shoulders square to the LoS if uncovered or their aligned DL leaves they move to the next level. Obviously a pulling G or T will not act the same.

The play us inside zone, outsize zone or zone stretch all allow for the back to find the seam or cutback lane

Without getting caught up on terminology, yes we heavily deploy combo blocks. Which aren't easy, especially against a well coached DL who will recognize and fight to occupy both players. This is precisely where you need that agility to make sure you get your head around the DL so your partner can get to the next level. The biggest reason I think we miss Kingsly is his ability from the center position to work with the guards on those combo blocks, from center it even adds another degree of difficulty.

We are probably in agreement in general but terminology us crucial to the discussion the ability to block laterally in space the hallmark of the spread using angles in place of sheer size. All linemen need to be agile but the zone is size critical and as stated your pads remain relatively square to the LoS In essence doubling the DL (its actually a 1/2 press unless the DL moves to the uncovered the OL) until the responsible OL secures his man.

Yes it is technique and commitment dependent and it takes time (reps) to develop consistency. This is where plug and play portal is suboptimal

I don’t want to oversimplify this, but we’ve passed for a total of 4 TDs this year.

    this is what we are

I hope Billy doesn’t listen. Mucschamp did and changed OCs every year. You saw how effective that was.

That’s the thing. The crazy offensive output comes from running verts and running the ball up the middle. It’s not that innovative aside from running tempo.

Our tackles aren’t quick enough to give our QB some time to step up into the pocket.

I think coach Napier is holding out on many plays... that are in the playbook. I haven't seen many long bombs that AR was tossing around last year. And yes, Mertz can throw the ball well enough to make it work.

And just so there's no confusion here, and what I am NOT saying, I never said that Mertz has equal passing abilities as AR, nor is Mertz's arm strength equal to AR's. Some clown will invent that strawman if I don't nip that in the bud.
