20 stops entering the game. But Vandy is a competent offense. No world-beaters, but not slobs. We start M2M and pressure. 21 stops in a row. 3&4. C1M. 8 yard cushion on one side and a bail at snap. First down. Everyone else was tight. 2&9. Edge has been solid lately. Princely not even close, Burney too soft too. Big run. 4&4. We bring 5. Don't even cover the slot. They motioned a guy into that spot. Can't even tell who should have been there, it's that open. But Ventrell literally punches the ball out after 15. TO. We load up on the run inside, Vandy gets us pulling THREE OL outside, RB not even touched for 25. 3&8. Sim pressure, PR robber and then closes hard on the scramble, gets him. Princely PF. 1st down. 3&12. M2M. Ventrell loses, but PR gets the sack. Aaaaand facemask. FTR, he also got held. TD loses the edge. Burney has the gap filled, looks like RP loses the edge, but it's actually TD. Well, maybe. Perhaps we sent TD into the same gap as Burney. Unlikely. But looks bad for RP (and I thought that too live), but likely not RP. 3&G. RP makes early nasty spin move, on QB fast. Perkins gets okie-doked on a great pivot route. And Wright threw a dime getting killed. That's just a good play. But Perkins overplayed the out route that was basically going nowhere. Kamari also ate the cookie on a double move. Not high IQ on 3&G biting on moves at the 5. We blow one big time. Simple post from slot goes uncovered. Tre'vez goes literally to nowhere. But Boone gets fast pressure, Wright sees it late but can't get to it. 3&3. Kamari shows his promise. We bait a slant Vandy has already hit twice. Kamari never bails, has help deep from CB. Jumps it for P6. You can see CB react when he saw the drop, they were on the right page here. 3&14. Zone, bring 6. RP close again, forces a throwaway. Burney hold. FTR, contact is ALLOWED downfield in college. Actual hold? Eh, maybe. The play is literally over before the flag is even reached for. Play is nowhere near the action. Burney's guy is basically uninvolved. This is a trash call. 3&8. Simple dig route. The soft zone gets us again on these digs, comebacks, hitches, etc. 2&12. VM immediately bee lines the outside run. RB makes a nice stop on a dime. Burney takes this play off, no help after the dodge. RB escapes for a 1st down. VM pass coverage comes into play, TE beats him too easily. VM wants the push off, and it's not a crazy claim. But VM just not good in coverage. Princely gets washed out immediately, we have good backend coverage, but Wright is just strolling to the right. All day, Kamari bails for a deep route (not a bad decision), after all day, Wright finds the TE for the TD. Dexter at DE shows proper leverage and discipline, forces play inside for no gain. RP loses edge on 3&5 off the snap, goes hard upfield. RB sneaks through his gap for first. VM out. We have 7+ in the box. Burney runs himself out of the gap. Downhill gap play is a spot he should have never been in, yet here he is. He is all heart, this just isn't his jam. Vandy is on a 7-0 run/pass roll moving down to the 20, they throw at Marshall in M2M. Marshall models a coaching clinic and gets the pick. 3&8, Vandy works a gap, Dexter outmans his duel and closes it rudely. 3&9, 1:40, 9 in the box. Edges are set. Burney kills this play with prejudice. "Normal" D game. Clearly some problems and holes, but they were up to the task. One horrendous bust, but Vandy missed it. Edges weren't shut down, but not wide open. Lost some discipline with reaches and over-extensions, but those were also isolated and not consistent. This D was good enough to win with a good showing from the complimentary parts. Unfortunately ST was def "gamechangers" and the O was also just OK. Nothing super special either way here today, a mix of good and bad, only one catastrophic mistake that didn't get cashed in. Go Gators. Beat FSU.
Really like an explanation for those two gamechanging penalties. No hold called before the face mask and the late hold called on Burney where the ref literally waits till after the play to throw the flag.
