I hope you're using the "you" in the royal sense here. I'm not embracing the narrative I was commenting on in any shape, form or fashion. My actual point was that BN is not Mullen and if it comes to pass, in the fullness of time, that Toney is a flop I seriously doubt that BN will sit on his hands and do nothing. As for constraining the "discussion" 'til the off-season, I'm content to leave that sort of decision to the mods. Just sayin.'

I know it's year 1 and there will be growing pains but the fact of the matter is we are giving up 70% ? 3rd down conversions or something like that. I am guessing most of us don't think we have bottom of the barrel talent to have one of the worst defenses in the country so that leaves scheme. If it's not Toney, then who? I'm pretty sure Napier is not making these calls.

It’s mental breakdowns and not executing the proper things that they’re supposed to be doing. What’s happening is not what they are supposed to be doing. There is no scheme where they just don’t cover people at all

Maybe more film study then? It seems like they haven't had any coaching with the previous staff (which is certainly possible).
Hard to witness that we are just that bad.

We just don't have the type players needed to run the defense they want to run. Our deficiencies at DL and LB just magnify our inexperience in the DB field. As good as Miller is against the run, he can't cover a TE or RB to save his life. My issue on defense is we keep trying to fit round pegs in square holes. Hopefully we see some changes from the off week.

Since we are both clarifying our posts.. i never said we should constrain the discussion. i said this is a discussion for the off season. i feel there is no value in even trying to critique our new coaches 7 games in to their first season. i feel its counterproductive, adds much negative energy, and we cant make objective theories on how its going to be in the future. i also pointed out in another thread that the lsu game thread was a great example of people making rash judgements basis the firsr 20. minutes or so of the game
obviously people are entitled to discuss what's on their mind

We get zero pressure rushing four to start. I’m not sure coaching can do much about that. They can either do it or they can’t.

Thanks for the amplification. My original post was aimed at the suggestion that Billy might go down with the ship rather than fire a "buddy." Not only is that highly unlikely, but I also agree that it is ridiculously premature to even think about firing coaches seven games into the first year of a new regime. Although people can occasionally say silly things in the heat of the moment, I really don't see as much of that stuff here as I do in most other venues. By in large, this is a pretty mellow crowd which is why it's just about the only one I post on anymore. Peace, out.

I totally understand where you're coming from. It's frustrating as hell to watch the same thing happen over and over again. But any suggestion that the staff isn't working their collective butts off to correct a long-standing problem with poor talent evaluation, and even worse coaching, seems premature and unproductive to me. Please remember that this is the same staff that appears to be on the verge of landing a DB class for the ages, so let's not get too far ahead of ourselves in the quest for an instant turnaround. Frankly, this year's DB room is living proof of the fact that it's a lot harder to break a bad habit than it is to form a good one. Maybe that's why we're looking at such a huge influx of uber talented, un-granthamized DBs in this year's class. Just a thought.

Absolutely none at all. I'm batty enough as it is, I don't need to be hanging out in the belfry.

On the first drive against LSU, our defense got them into a 3rd and long, and our secondary gave their traditional 10-15 yard cushion while backpedaling at the snap and gave up an easy first down. We were able to force the offense into losing yards on 1st and 2nd down, and then played predictably passive on 3rd down and gave up that 15 yard curl/stop against Marshall.

It seems to be a chicken or the egg situation. We can’t get seem to get pressure with only the front 4, but when we do get pressure the cushion given up by the secondary allows the QB to make a quick, safe throw to get rid of the ball. We also don’t ask our interior DL to pass rush, but more to contain the QB in the pocket and not give up run lanes. I think we have scheme issues in combination with talent issues. The defense seems to want to play passive and react to the opposing offense, instead of dictating to the opposing offense and force them to make contested plays.

I’ve been to a few games this year and started watching our four man pass rush as a whole. It’s not too impressive.

Doesn't Coach Raymond have some.say in the CB's giving so much cushion. He is Co-DC right?
