Biggest worry is, and we will find out soon enough, is this - Does Napier value friendship with a coach over performance. eg.. Mullen not getting rid of Grantham.
And to add on this this, I don’t see him taking a DC position next year, and Billy isn’t going to demote Toney after one year. Maybe after 2024 season, but not this year or next (2023), JMO. Toney made improvements at ULL every year, while there. BN knows this and will give him time. Have to think JC will get another HC gig elsewhere. Would love to see him at UF, but don’t.
Our DL and LB position will actually be worse next year than this unless we use the transfer portal effectively. No HS freshman is coming in that will help immediately on the DL and particularly at DT in the SEC. ILB and DT needs to be shored up significantly next year and we need some pass rushing specialists that can get to the QB.
Not getting Harold Perkins last year hurts. Hopefully there is a LB out there we can flip, who can help, like he has for LSU. The portal will be key for these positions, after the season.
Repeat with me...again... This is Game 7 of Year 1. Threats such as this 1) don't help with the perception of the fans (Grantham should have been canned after Year 3 or even during the season), and 2) helps you to sleep better at night? Really??? First and foremost, the next game, albeit against the supposed #1 ranked team, is going to be played after the bye week. Byes are WAY different than game weeks. We shall see if there are substantial changes in personnel and/or philosophy...on both sides of the ball. I did not say success, I said substantial CHANGES. Second, if Toney isn't doing what Napier asks, then he WILL be canned, probably right after the end of the season. Repeat...again... Napier is NOT Dumbo. Do it for your own sanity.
Te - you say this, but actually the toughest decision a coach has to make is removing a friend from a coaching position that you asked to follow you from another program. Al Golden could not remove his friend as DC at Miami, Scott Frost could not remove his friend as DC at Nebraska, and Mullen waited too late to do so with TG at UF. Very difficult for a HC to do. Can he put program above friendship, if needed? Will he bring in an Analyst to coach behind the scenes like Collins after season? You are correct we will find out in the future. I will give him 3 years to get more of own players and for players to learn and become more comfortable with new schemes. However, I will express my disappointment if our Defense performs more poorly versus USF than any other opponent USF faces.
Maybe one who has reason to believe that bigger things were in the offing Hopefully they are as unalike in that area as they are in every other respect. Also, as I recall, Toney was not BN's first choice for DC and the degree of commitment to him through thick and thin may not be as rock-solid as some apparently believe. WRK?
Because we had Mullen who was loyal to a fault keeping TG and Hev, you are going to worry (in the middle of our first season with coach)that any other coach that comes in might be like Mullen and keep underperforming coaches to the detriment of the team?. This is obviously a discussion at some point in the offseason, not in the middle of year 1.
Nothing wrong with your take. But the anxiety because of the mess we have endured from the past three or even four coaches has us proverbially shooting first and asking questions later.
